With new exhibits, Atlas Cement Museum to begin its 12th season in Northampton
A working, century-old model railroad car that unloads cement dust is one of several rare historic items going on display this month at Northampton's Atlas Cement Memorial Museum.
The museum, in the borough's municipal building at 1401 Laubach Ave., will open for its 12th season Sunday afternoon.
The giant model railroad car is ''a beautiful piece, and it actually works,'' said museum founder and curator Edward Pany. ''It's a one-of-a-kind.''
The model was built by Hercules Cement of Stockertown to help the company patent its process of unloading cement off bulk railroad cars, according to a news release. Read more

Palmer man gets 1-2 years after facing 48 years for crimes
Kerry Jones had a typical childhood -- he played sports, participated in Scouting, began training to become a chef and graduated from Easton Area High School.
His life took an unusual twist in August, when, in a span of days, Jones, who was then 18, went on a crime spree with a friend and racked up enough offenses that could have sent him to state prison for 48 years.
Instead, Northampton County Judge Stephen G. Baratta imposed a county prison term of five years of probation and 11-22 months in the county prison. Read more
