Tribe exemption unfair, casino officials say

“There is a definite impact, and it's not irrelevant.”

A smoking ban approved by the Michigan Senate that includes casinos could keep gamblers away in Detroit, and gives an unfair advantage to casinos operated by tribes, casinos officials and observers said. via Detroit Free Press

I think it's unfair period. The government should not have any say as to whether a bar or casino should allow smoking or not. If non-smokers don't want to be around smoke, go to the non-smoking section, go to Windsor, go to a non-smoking place or stay home. Smoking is still legal and to smokers, an enjoyable past-time. Why do our rights have to be taken away. Most people in bars are smokers.

Since when is any kind of gambling a "level playing field"? If it is such a good thing, the casinos (any business) should go smoke-free without a law and be very happy. If it is a bad move, they will fail. Those are the rules of business, my good people. You don't ask the competetion to change so you can have an advantage over them(or so you can stay in business). You compete!

A free market and level playing field was before the bans. The owners chose how they would run their business and provided for both groups. Business decisions were made, and those who went smoke-free didn't get huge profits they hoped for. The only way to level the field was to force the other owners to agree with their decision to go smoke-free.

Leave the Indians out of this, they are just now getting their due and those treaties cannot be abolished by any mayor that doesn't like it. You want level again???...reverse the bans and we are back where we started.

ROFLMAO!!! The Anti-smoking establishment can scream, throw themselves on the floor and have the biggest tantrum in history and it isn't going to do them any good!!! Indian land is exempt from all their puny little anti-smoking bans, and there isn't a damn thing they can do about it!! Keep making these unjust laws and the Indians will be making money hand over fist because of it and they will buy land in every state to set up business' that allow smoking. And NOTHING can be done to stop it. The Indian Tribes will take back the US... because they can afford it.

I think it a very just reward to the Indians... Plus now anyone who wants to gamble and smoke doesn't have to be forced to let others make their decisions for them.

I am currently 2 weeks away from being 2 years cigarette free (june 1st 2006) so when i hear the smoking rights people whining, I kinda laugh at them. Even though I'm a former smoker. i dont sympathize anymore with them. its a dirty filthy habit that does nothing but kill you....for 5 dollars a pack.

I say the smoking ban in public places should extend to the indian casinos also...even though they got screwed over a couple hundred years ago, their descendants are more then compensated these days.

Don't care and luckily, our local governments CAN NOT extend their policies on the reservations so it doesn't matter what you wish. The Indians get to implement their own policy as it applies to their business.

What you, and, others like you think has absolutely no bearing on this situation. The treaties made with the American Indians are not negotiable. They are set in stone, and no one can change them, including the Anti Smoking machine. Get used to it... it isn't going to go away.

There are ways to make it cost ineffective to sell cigarette and alcohol on casino reservations. Tariffs across reservation boundary lines?

Hahaha...you think these local yokel Mayors can issue tariffs?? The feds are NOT going to get involved in this for a local or state ban.

#1. I don't need to quit smoking... I already have.

#2. If they made cigarettes illegal in the U.S. you still couldn't stop smoking on Indian land. It is written in the original treaties that Indian land is a sovereign state, so what you think is irrelevant.

Please do your homework before making such ludicrous comments... "Tariffs across reservation boundary lines?"... There are no tariffs or taxes on Tribal land, including no property taxes.
