Hundreds of customers converged on Springtown Market's opening day a couple weeks ago.
''We got blown out of the water,'' says Maria Weick, its volunteer manager. ''It was amazing. It was like standing there and watching a tidal wave come at you. We were delighted and we were shocked.''

As Patrick Bowersock sees it, fastnachts are as important to Pennsylvanians as Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, shoo-fly pie and Punxsutawney Phil.
In Johnny Appleseed-style, Bowersock spreads the word about these awesome, but homely, doughnuts whenever he travels.
If he has his way, they'll rise to be as famous as the Mardi Gras king cakes baked in New Orleans and the pancakes cooked in England that, like fastnachts, are made for Shrove Tuesday (Feb 5. this year).
Although 36-year-old Bowersock and other Pennsylvania Dutch cooks make fastnachts only once a year -- on the day before Ash Wednesday -- these doughnuts are steeped in tradition. They deserve the same attention given to those other more famous pre-Lenten baked goods, according to this Springtown resident who has taken up their cause. Read more
