This column marks the end of an era. It is no longer written, as it has been for over twenty-five years, by``The Ellsworths.'' Starting in 1984 this column, which started as ``Where Nature Smiles,'' was penned by ``The Ellsworths,'' the he-we and the she-we who famously noted, when asked, that they each wrote every other word.

It is a bit strange: The holiday to celebrate the independence and birth of our 233-year-old government has evolved into a celebration of things that bind us together beyond government.
