"Dottie Poage watched the execution of another man convicted in the case, Elijah Page, two years ago."

I wonder if her heart began to race, her breath becoming short and fast, her palms began to sweat, and her face flushed with ecstasy.

I hope so , she has earned that right. Maybe someday when you have grown up, you will truly understand what loosing a son to murder means.
Once again your post is sick.

I wouldn't say she "earned that right." That's kind of sick too. First post was out of line, though.

You don't earn a right to kill someone, and while I sympathize with her, I think someone who has had a loved one murdered probably operates from an emotional point of view rather than a logical or moral one.

I don't believe in the death penalty. I'm sure if someone killed my son, I would want them killed. I don't think those points are in conflict.

My current position is based on what I believe is morally right after my lifetime of thought and debate.

The other position is what I would probably think when put in a situation of unbelievable emotional anguish and loss, the most intense negative emotion I could imagine. I wouldn’t fault someone for wanting to kill the murderer in that situation, but I hardly think that someone in that position is operating as a thoughtful, rational, moral human being.

There are valid arguments for the death penalty. However,"how would you feel" is not one of them.

Certainly you have a right to your opinion and your points are valid also. I am yet to hear anyone on Topix who has lost a child or loved one to murder protest the death penalty.
It has caused many happy families to self-destruct.
The heartbreak and loss can never be felt by the murderer or his family.

Here's a family right here in the state. They are an acquaintance, although I wouldn't claim to be close with them.

http://www.argusleader.com/article/20060829/N...

Ann Kathryn “Katie” Clarey was 11 years old when she was kidnapped, raped and murdered while doing her paper route in central Sioux Falls on May 9, 1991. Kelly Van Engelenhoven, then a 28-year-old man with a history of exposing himself, was arrested for the murder....

For all his certainty about the death penalty, Mike Clarey says he believes there may be times when taking life is justified to protect innocent people.

“Unfortunately in this country it’s become politicized,” he said.“It’s more for revenge than for justice, and that’s where the problem comes in.”

Although, again, I think if you've had a loved one killed, your reaction would automatically be "Kill him!" rather than "What is the moral and best route for society?" Emotion does cloud judgment.

For that matter, I'd bet you can find many people who have had a loved one killed by a distracted or drunk driver who would want the death penalty in that case. Although sad and horrific, I think most agree that the death penalty is probably too extreme in those cases. But the victims' emotions wouldn't be ruled by reason.

I do think there are other decent arguments for the death penalty that I struggle with, I just don't think the "How would you feel?" argument holds much weight.

I probably should have made it clear for those who don't read the link, the Clarey family asked the state not to pursue the death penalty, and the murderer went to prison for life.

I tend to feel premeditated murder or any crime were a firearm or weapon is used are punishable by death. Second offense
murder too. But you bring up a good point about drunk drivers. Although not premeditated also no accident. I have a friend in jail now for vehicular homicide , he received 17 yrs. Not enough in my opinion sorry to say.

Of the entire Bible you quote only 8 words?

I suggest you have a bit more reading to do, because it also says "vengeance shall be mine".

Um. I believe his point is that you're taking things out of context. If you're going to do that, don't call it the Bible.

Daily Horoscope for December 22

Leo

If you ask someone to give you a hand today, don't be surprised if they make a mess of it. That's probably because their mind isn't on the job, but it might also be because your instructions aren't as clear as usual. So before you get angry, check that what you said made sense. Relations with someone older or more influential than you could also be blighted by confusion or doubt now.
