Mom hospitalized, case still being probed by authorities Staff Report A 7-year-old boy is home with his father in Mount Airy today, after spending more than 48 hours in the forests of Alleghany County.

SPARTA A motorist on N.C. 18 near the Laurel Springs community found a missing Alleghany County boy and his mother walking along the highway a few minutes before 1 p.m. today, authorities said.

The 7-year-old boy who has been missing since Monday after disappearing with his mother has been found safely near where authorities spent the day Tuesday searching.

An Amber Alert was in effect Tuesday evening for a child in Alleghany County with ties to Surry County, who is believed to be endangered.

The Alleghany Sherrifs Office is looking for seven year-old Matthew James Wood. He is described as 4'7'', 55 lbs, with brown hair and brown eyes.

Sheriff's deputies in Alleghany County are searching for a 35-year-old woman and a 7-year-old boy.

The Alleghany Christmas Tree Association Choose and Cut Farms will present the annual Mountain Heritage Festival in downtown Sparta on Saturday, September 27.
