Breakfast and lunch crowds at a popular diner in Hickory Grove have been talking for days about a serial killer on the loose just minutes from their homes in western York County.

The suspected South Carolina serial killer fatally shot during a burglary this week lived in Volusia County as a young man and was charged in a string of burglaries more than 20 years ago in the Edgewater area, a retired police investigator said Tuesday.

News that the Gaffney serial killer had been killed by police Monday and posed no more threat to the public came as a welcome surprise in rural western York County.
