It can't be a mid-life crisis. That's too simple and ... besides ... would require me to live another 60 years.

With fall colors still several weeks away below 4,000 feet, Tahoe National Forest officials offer scenic drives for earlier "leaf peepers" wishing to see colors through mid-October. Highway 49 from Nevada City through Downieville to Sierra City features big-leaf maple, oak, locust and dogwood as one winds through the North Yuba River canyon.

Carol Lee Acorn died Sept. 12, 2011 at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital. She was 67.

Albert Paul Pratti, died peacefully on Aug. 7, 2011 at the age of 94. A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug.
