Shiloh National Military Park began in 1893 when a group of veterans from the Battle of Shiloh visited the cemetery and were upset to hear the cemetery superintendent say farmers regularly turned up the dead when they plowed their fields, and road construction also uncovered remains.

The final day of the 25th annual Civil War re-enactment in Keokuk sent many re-enactors home early when heavy rains began to fall just before noon.

"Shadow of Shiloh, Major General Lew Wallace in the Civil War," is something of a vindication of Wallace, who was a hero at Monocacy in 1864.

The Civil War Battle of Shiloh and the departure of the ill-fated Donner Party from Springfield will be covered during a continuing education program for volunteers on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Multi-Purpose Room.
