Letters: Illegal fireworks abound in Seaside

NEW COUNTY JAIL, STATE PRISON, AND MORE TAXES

My favorite free county news weekly is the Monterey County Weekly. I am surprised that Zachary Stahl scooped the other two daily newspapers in his June 26th article, CLOSE TO HOME (page 9) regarding: the new state prisoner reentry facility for inmates within a year of release, the plans to build a new county jail, and the necessary funding which will result in new taxes necessary to fund both projects.

Though the concept of transitional reentry of state prisoners back to their communities under Assembly Bill (AB) 900 is well intentioned, it is too expensive and a shameful way to hold counties hostage for needed building funds for the construction of new county jails.

As taxpayers, we need to pay attention to what the Board of Supervisors will be doing in the coming months regarding these projects.

Though the county is expecting to receive an $80 million grant to build a new jail in exchange for allowing the state to build a mini-prison close to the present county jail, the county still must come up with $50 million of it’s own money to build the jail, and at least $11 million a year to staff the county jail.

If people were allowed to marry animals or if adults were allowed to marry children under the age 0f 10 (like one of Mohammad's wives) natural marriages probably wouldn't be destroyed, but most people would believe each would be wrong and at least the first would be a serious crime against nature.
