County to challenge decision on ballot marijuana question

Bernalillo County will challenge a New Mexico election official's decision that nonbinding questions about marijuana penalties and a tax proposal can't go on the November general election ballot. The Bernalillo County Commission voted 3-2 Monday to challenge Secretary of State Dianna Duran's decision that state law doesn't authorize advisory ballot questions.

Bloomfield's insurer says lawsuits against city manager have not hurt city

Two lawsuits settled collectively for $462,500 this year have not hurt the City of Bloomfield's standing with its insurer, the New Mexico Municipal League. Edwin Zendel, risk manager for the league, said the city's credit rating and costs associated with two lawsuits against City Manager David Fuqua have had no detrimental effect on the city's insurance costs or its standing with the association, which handled both cases for the city.

New Mexico's top election official decided Wednesday that nonbinding questions about marijuana penalties won't be placed on the November general election ballot in two of the state's largest counties. Secretary of State Dianna Duran, a Republican, said state law didn't authorize the placement of advisory questions on the ballot that only ask voters their opinions on issues.

Judge sentences Santa Fe woman to prison in uncle's death

SANTA FE >> A judge in Santa Fe has sentenced a 36-year-old northern New Mexico woman who was acquitted of murder in her uncle's killing but convicted of lesser charges. State District Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer on Tuesday sentenced 36-year-old Rhiannon Montoya to 12 years in prison for tampering with evidence and aggravated burglary.
