I know this wasn't the girls fault and that she wasn't asking for it. I think as women, we need to protect ourselves and value ourselves a little more. By that I mean, not walking anywhere at night alone (this was taught by our parents) and/or not getting too sloppy drunk to realize what is going on. This should never ever happen to anyone and I hope they catch the fu cker who did this to her.
so women shouldn't walk anywhere alone at night? if we do, then...? ladies, i guess we have to stay home when the sun goes down and live in fear of being raped and then being blamed for it!

No, iamwoman, the woman in question DOES need to take ownership of being dumb and that is NOT saying that she deserved being raped and assaulted. It was not her fault she got attacked. But it was her fault that she was so drunk she obviously could not resist, run away, or even realize that perhaps walking in that neighborhood alone at night was not the smartest thing to do.

Criminals are out there, and when we are in risky situations and places we have to have our brain working and our eyes and ears open to protect ourselves, as my daughters learned in their self defense classes in grade school.

A shout out to my brothers and sisters; An intoxicated person is not capable of consent. Having sex with a drunk or stoned person is a bad idea. You expose yourself to many hazards. Being accused of rape or assault is just one (unlikely at that). STD's, becoming involved with an addict or someone with deep emotional problems seems much more likely and equally distructive outcome.
If you see someone drunk, on the street, they need your help. Help get them home safely. We're our bother's (and sister's) keeper.

Find out where she was drinking and start monitoring those places. The bartenders in this town will serve you until you run out of money. They could care less how drunk you are as long s you don't cause trouble.

It's not safe for "any" person to walk the streets of Santa Cruz alone after dark any more - man or woman - drunk or sober.

On the other hand, you get the kind of government you elect. Santa Cruz elected one that cuts cops before programs; provides profits to gangs by turning a blind eye to drugs like marijuana and events like 4-20, and of course, proclaims itself a sanctuary city so more riff-raff (and illegal at that!) can roam the streets.

Santa Cruz had the potential to be heaven on earth; but the "left" turn it took in 1981 set it on a course for ruination.

Therefore, until you elect a new leadership that changes course to provide for common-sense, community, business, and residents, instead of continual political pandering and payoffs... bad things like this are going to happen. And don't forget, as you've seen for yourselves - a city in decline gets worse.

This is more like payback to the city of S.C.

Expect more to come. You think the gangs will sit

back quietly. The people police will pay. Its not

personal, its just business.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with you. Throw in alcohol and you become a target. The percentage of risk of something terrible happening goes sky high when you're waisted on alcohol. Even if you don't drink Santa Cruz is no longer a safe place to walk at night alone. Especially if you're a women. It's a sad note on our community.

What do you mean by dumb? Blame the perpetrator, not the victim.

I don't think is her fault, however is important to put attention to our surroundings and to understand that there are predators after women.
everywhere... even in supermarkets, video stores, etc etc you can see guys checking women in weird ways.
in bars, when you see a guy in a corner checking everybody else..be aware..he may not even be drinking.
at night always be aware..specially in parking lots.
what can city leaders do abut things like this?

I noticed that area of the 3 fenced house. It really needs to be cleaned up. It would only take one small match or thrown cigarette to cause a fire. Now I see another reason it should be cleaned up.

Not PC to say, but absolutely correct. If I pin $100 bills to my clothes I should'nt get robbed. But guess what just might happen. Sorry, but it's a jungle out there.

Of course it wasn't the victim's fault. However, as much as we don't want to admit it, there are people out there who are predatory, and we need to protect ourselves against them. No, that doesn't mean women have to wear berkas and stay in at night. That's just silly. What it does mean is taking reasonable precautions. I think getting hammered in a bar, and leaving alone it very poor judgment. Did she deserve what happened to her? Of course not. But some reasonable precautions would have prevented it.

Another unpleasant truth is that the SCPD has a very bad record when it comes to resolving rape cases by making an arrest. Rape is 4x the State average in the City of Santa Cruz and statewide, 42% of rape cases are "collapsed" by police making an arrest. In our City, it's only 13%, and our SCPD PR rep, Zach Friend, gives us gobbedy-gook responses in an attempt to obfuscate this fact.

shame on you. you have no right to question the actions of the victim.
So go ahead, take a stroll in Central Park some evening past dark. See if you can "take back the night".

Sometimes a "girl" (do you call 28-year-old men "boys"?) has to walk alone at night. That's why I'm armed.
