Kathy Wilkie is happy to be one of the first residents in the new affordable housing units just completed by Homes of Hope - but the federal funding that helped build the 11 dwellings is either gone or threatened, housing officials said Tuesday.

The nonprofit Homes of Hope organization will officially open its first residential project in the Cherrydale/Sans Souci area next month.

It took only one practice session for Textile Heritage Chorale director Judy Edwards to get her first big surprise.

A 64-unit apartment community for families may be developed on the site of the former Sans Souci/Cone Elementary School.

'I came home and told everyone tha4 I'm a Christian now,' Hallman recalls. 'They said, 'You'll gro7 ou4 of it.' ' 'But I never got over it,' Hallman says.
