One for the books
Elin Vanderlip, whose home has been a draw for stars of Hollywood and politics, has written a book about her life and friendships.

Elin Vanderlip sounds fancinating! I would love to read about her life/history that she has to offer in her book!

That place is haunted though. And I have scars from their guard dogs to prove it anyway.

I agree. I love hearing about love stories from another place in time. PV truly is a beautiful location. It's nice to know a little history about it.

This is a book I'll read, what an amazing woman who can look back with a BIG smile ! Only I can appreciate such a story ! LOVE IT !!!!!

but what is this doing on the front page? is this a news paper or a book review? i pay for news, not book reviews, at least i dont expect them to be on the front page/front section. the breeze just keeps going downhill.

Oh edd, lighen up!

Sounds like an amazing lady who wrote an amazing book. Go away edd!

It's refreshing to see a front page article about a part of South Bay history. We all see articles about gang related murders and other garbage far too much. |
|
It's on the front page for two reasons edd: #1 It's a "Human Interest" story..... Even if it does not interest you. #2 John Bogert's column is also on the front page..... every day edd..... even if you never read it. So edd, your options are easy: #1 Ignore it and turn the page #2 Stop reading the Daily Breeze and try reading another newspaper. OH YEAH: The TIMES doesn't keep up with the local news that you want..... I guess that it sucks to be you pal! |

This is news Edd. Maybe not sports, weather and "gotcha" politics...far better. Meaningful and humanistic...The sun continuing it's descending trajectory on a golden era...the likes of which this world may never see again. A lifestyle rife and replete with fascinating human adventures that stir the imagination, conjure up exotic locations, tug at the heart strings and spirit the soul. All within a back drop layered in great deeds and accomplishments laced with a trickle of vulgarity and scandalous antics that have reaped admiration as well as envy, jealousy and hatred - the best and worst that this world has to offer all in one package...Don't leave us...stay, learn...contemplate the human condition and enjoy all of the "different" things that life has to offer.
I for one am glad that she is willing to share. I wish her well. |

This is a legend. |
|
BTW they probably have guard dogs to ward off the idiots that keep trespassing on their property to see the "ghosts". Legend!! |
|

The Vanderlip's have been a mystery to many on the hill hence the idiots that try to trespass to see the "ghosts" so it is nice to see one of them speak out about their history. The Vanderlips have been a great part of PV history for a long time. I remember reading that they are the reason there are peacocks on the hill and I remember a mention in Myrna Loy's autobiography about staying at the Vanderlip's and eating one of thier prized peacocks.

Like all kids raised in the South Bay....we too were challenged to enter the Vanderlip Estate on a dark, foogy and cold night.
To prove we'd done it, we had to bring back a piece of the italian cypress from the rear yard. I don't recall a dog, but there were always people moving about, and in the dark, they looked threatening! Stories of a ghost, and a headless horseman living there, added to the sense of danger. We were also told of the Ghost Ship that prowled the seas off Haggerty's on foggy nights. I will certainly buy the book!!! |

The house is not haunted, I have know the family for years. I have fond memories of playing on the property when I was a child. It's truely an amazing place with a lot of separate villas and lush gardens.

Great story, Great Lady.....where can we buy the book. Wishing her good health and many more productive years.
If I may... "You go girl". |

You missed the best part. The place is a cesspool - or has a cesspool. I learned several years ago that the place was built before there were sewers out there. They have never been willing to pay for a sewer connection, so once a week or so, a vacuum truck goes out there and collects their poop and hauls it away. Pretty weird.

It is the same way in Rolling Hills. No really that weird, we use to have one.

I am a native Torrance girl, graduating from Torance High in 1993. I have to say, you were not cool untill you did the "Vanderlips Dare". The excitment of knowing the code to the gate to driving up the hill not knowing what was in store. Most of the time, you had guys telling you ghost stories on the way up, so by the time you got there you were already scared out of your mind. Usually they would scare themselves at the same time, then you would just agree that it probably wasn't a good idea and just go to the beach and make-out. Oh the memories.........
