The lady is very lucky the horse did not throw her while reacting to the bees. Incredibly level headed thinking on her part, and a well broke horse I suppose, saved her life. Kudos for not succumbing to panic! Hope she is recovering from the stings.

I have to agree with westside steve. This woman was pretty cool under fire.
I have a question though, but not quite on topic. We've read a lot about colony collapse disorder and bees dying off. Does anyone know if CCD affects Africanized bees? And if not, why not? |

1 Thanks for nice words Steve and Don. I give all the kudos to my horse, he's a very cool dude! We've been bud's since he was a colt and I was a chick! He sure could have chucked me and ran off if he was your average horse. I don't know about not panicing...I'd run until I couldn't catch my breath, got stung more, start running again for 1/4mi up hill, and then they finally went back to the colony. Even my horses were huffin and puffin! I must have looked like Forrest Gump....I was RUNNANG! Sting welts are subsiding on us both, we're fine but a little jumpy around buzzing things! The yearling filly thought the whole thing was a big party! She didn't get stung lucky her. |

I rent a home on Packsaddle Road in Rolling Hills. There are thousands of angry African bees swarming the hillside. They have a hive in our roof. They get there via tiny holes (meant for releasing hot air from the home) all around the roof. Sprays and traps are useless. My walk was cancelled after the pests chased me around the deck outside. No way is it worth getting stung just to get in shape. Those guys hurt like crazy! Oddly, the regular bees here from a month ago are gone. I can tell the difference because the stripes on the Africanized bee abdomen have more contrast --- almost similar to a Yellow Jacket.
Killer bees will follow the victim as far as 1/4 mile and will wait if victim is submerged in water. They are attracted to movement, especially hissy-fit type frantic flailing movements. Oh, they love the color yellow too. I'm off to wrap myself in foil and hide under the bed. |
