However, while this year’s scores generally went down because of re-indexing, next year’s scores may be down, too, because they will be scored on a tougher, yet-to-be-determined scale.

Hold on, it's gonna get bumpy! The state pretty much acknowledged that it's education levels were no longer competitive with the majority of the US. That is why the tests have gotten tougher. Now they are saying give us time to adjust to the new tests. Quite frankly, a harder test does not equal a better education. It just shows you how poor of an education our children have really been getting compared to other states. When scores are down at a school, I have heard teachers blame the students that cycled through. They said, just wait once this group gets out our scores will go up more.

My third grader doesn't even know how to use an encyclopedia or a dictionary. What are we teaching them? Go home and have mommy or daddy look it up online for you? My middle schooler is doing spelling this year because the newer teacher was appalled last year when he realized his students couldn't spell. Technology is a great thing, but man is it dumbing down our kids education. Oh they don't need spelling, they have spellcheck now. They don't need the harder math, they have calculators, they don't need access to the library for research because they have a project, they can get it online at home. Thankfully for my child we do have internet and we wer able to get some information but I would like her to have the abiltiy to find the knowledge without the computer. Guess I need to invest in some Encyclopedias....

Sorry for going on and on....guess I had a lot on my mind.

I just called the Times because the graphic on the front page didn't match the state figures or the grades in the article, and it turns out that somebody accidentally mixed up Hancock and Hawkins scores on the graphic. The grades written in the article arwe right. Hawkins got straight C's in achievement and Hancock got two C's and two D's.

I'm a little torn on this myself.

On one hand we think that they need to use an encyclopedia and dictionary but if you really think about it, why? I can't tell you the last time I picked up either. Information is so easily accessed it really makes no sense to waste time to look in a book to get the exact same information you can find online much quicker.

I believe times have changed and we had better change with it. I think if the school systems are running short on money it's time to put the Arts on the backburner and focus on technology and health. We have the laziest, fattest kids on the planet and we are daily falling behind China and India as far as tech goes. How many of these kids grow up to have a job in the arts vs how many grow up to have jobs in technology?
