More than 200 high school students from communities throughout the North Shore on Saturday partied the night away at Deerfield High School's first Valentine's Day Buddy Dance.

The good news for taxpayers working on their 2011 tax returns is there aren't many major surprises this filing season.

Officials are investigating what caused the fire that damaged a newly constructed single-family home early Friday morning, according to the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District.

The fire began about 4:45 a.m. in a four-car attached garage and spread to the first-floor living area of the home on the 0-100 block of Wildflower Lane, according to the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District.

"Every year taxpayers are leaving money on the table by not claiming all the credits and deductions to which they are entitled," says Kathy Pickering, executive director of The Tax Institute at H&R Block.

Gene Melchiorre, 84, of Riverwoods, was inducted into the Highland Park High School Sports Hall of Fame after nearly a decade of waiting.
