A recount Monday confirmed former City Commissioner Joe Lopez defeated incumbent Kitter Huerta by one vote in the May 12 election.

The NWS reports spotters noted tornadoes briefly touching down in farm fields four miles northwest of Rio Hondo, north of FM 508 around 3:40 a.m. A funnel cloud reportedly touched down in Laureles just northeast of San Pedro.

The tornadoes twisted through Cameron County early Friday with touchdowns reported in Rio Hondo, Laureles and San Benito.

A Rio Hondo High School teacher has been suspended after a student filed a charge against him alleging assault, Rio Hondo Independent School District Superintendent Anneliese McMinn said.

Although the school districts will eventually benefit from a boost in property tax revenues, it is too early to begin estimating extra tax dollars for schools, officials said.
