On May 4, 1598, the Spanish colonists Don Juan de OA ate -- who was in this vicinity -- eased north over the Rio Grande, OA ate naming his crossing point El Paso del Rio del Norte, meaning "The Pass across the Great River of the North." Nowadays, Mexico refers to the stream as the Rio Bravo .
