Swannanoa Valley Museum announces moderate hikes to historic locations
Almost 50 people have now completed the Swannanoa Valley Museum's popular, but strenuous Swannanoa Valley Rim Explorer Hike Series, and more than two-dozen hikers have already registered for the 2014 series.

In June 1864, Dr. V.N. Seawell, a prominent Moore County physician traveling by stagecoach to Asheville, saw 22 Junior Reserve soldiers, in charge of 48 battle-scarred prisoners, stop at a spring in what is now Ridgecrest to break for lunch.

"We'd been doing hikes before that, but wanted to come up with something that was really challenging and unique for people to see our history come to life," said Anne Chesky Smith, executive director of the Swannanoa Valley Museum, which organizes the series.
