Editorial: Richmond gang rape highlights need for parent involvement

Full story: San Jose Mercury News

The gang rape of a teenage girl outside a Richmond High School dance last month has become a national outrage, as well it should - raising questions about the culpability of bystanders who watched and did nothing for more than two hours.

First, the article is wrong that the victim left the dance before calling her dad for a ride. She called her father and then went outside for him to pick her. While the brutal assualt was occuring, the father was looking for his daughter inside the building.

Secondly, start talking about and blaming the real root of the problem; the home environment and lack of parenting that led to how these young men developed totally void of a moral and social conscience

Agreed that the home environment generally sucks in "da hood"! The girls/women get impregnated starting when they are barely into puberty and "my baby's daddy" immediately bails out, searching for another bitch or hoe to knock up and desert. Kids are raised on welfare bucks while mama smokes crack, gets looped on booze and gives $10 blow jobs on San Pablo avenue. No it's not that bad in EVERY family and some women do the best they can in raising their kids. Some daddies also face up to their responsibility but sadly they are the exception and not the rule. In general family life in "da hood" sucks big time!
Then you have the OUTSIDE OF THE HOME ENVIRONMENT! Start with that cultural rot called "gangsta rap" which glorifies punks, thugs and gangs just as it condones every uncivil and criminal act up to and including rape and murder. Women are considered "bitches" and "hoes" whose main purpose in life is to sexually satisfy the thugs at all times and to be beat up or raped if they fail to do just that. Great message for impressionable young people eh? Then you have those violent video games, many of them nothing more than crime and murder simulators. I could go on and on....even if you are trying to be a good parent you are totally fucked before you start!
i agree 100%. I don't live in Cali but I see the moral decay in Atlanta Ga. And it is growing. Gang violence is killing our kids everywhere. whether it's white on black/black on white, hispanic on black/black on hispanic, etc. At some point these schools have to take control of these bullies. Atlanta schools have gone back to uniforms in many areas. one area even separated boys from girls altogether. Schools are supposed to be for LEARNING.

My be she was just dragged off and forced to drink. That is a probability.

Nah from all the evidence it doesn't appear that's what happened. She chose to drink just as many teens do. Regardless of that and whether she drank too much of not, even if she passed out...it doesn't mean she or any girl or woman deserved to be raped by a pack of animals. Witnesses have already confirmed that's exactly what happened.

Are you sure she chose to drink? Where did that info come from? My understanding was that she was just waiting for her ride. Outside the building.

It came from the articles in the paper and on the TV news. She apparently went into the secluded space with someone she knew and voluntarily started drinking. Again no excuse at all for rape! I didn't see any article at all that even hinted she was forced to drink.

Daily Horoscope for December 24

Leo

Perhaps it's the fact that it's Christmas Eve and everyone is busy, but you can't help feeling that you're walking on eggshells around certain people. Their emotions are very close to the surface and could erupt at a moment's notice, perhaps in a storm of tears or a fit of pique. Calm them down and ask if you can do anything to help.
