Reynoldsburg Navy Reserve Member Among Three Dead In Afghanistan

The Columbus Dispatch reports a Reynoldsburg man who was with the U.S. Navy Reserve was one of three coalition troops killed near the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, this morning, a family member has confirmed. Relatives were informed this afternoon about the death of Steve Byus, 39, said Daniel Byus, his younger brother who lives in Wellston in Jackson County, where they grew up.

Class size at heart of Reynoldsburg teachers' contract dispute

Though several Reynoldsburg teachers have a class with more than 30 students this year, the average class size for nearly all of the district's schools is less than 25 students. According to a Dispatch analysis of district attendance, Baldwin Road Junior High and Summit Road STEM Elementary have the highest class-size averages, with 24 students.

Reynoldsburg Education Association, an affiliate of National Education Association and Ohio Education Association, has been negotiating a new contract with Reynoldsburg City School District since May. The union plans to picket up to 20 locations, including school buildings, athletic facilities and district offices. In a release announcing the 10-day strike notice , union spokeswoman Kathy Evans accused the school board and superintendent of "continuing a divisive ideological crusade" by pushing to implement merit pay and refusing to meet union demands on raises and class size caps.

Rejected pay offer contained big boost for Reynoldsburg teachers

High-performing teachers in Reynoldsburg who took advantage of nearly every bonus available under the contract rejected by the union on Sunday could have seen their pay increase by more than 30 percent over three years, according to a Dispatch analysis. Meanwhile, even some teachers who performed at the lowest level would have been paid 18 percent more by the end of the three-year contract because of base-pay and step increases.

The Reynoldsburg school board OK'd a contingency plan today to keep schools open if teachers strike on Sept. 19. The board, which had already hired Michigan-based strike management company Huffmaster, held an emergency meeting where they approved a strike resolution, curriculum purchases and additional security.
