With the conclusion of the 26th annual Reedville Fishing Derby, Smith Point Sea Rescue reflects on the importance of local sponsorship and attendance.

REEDVILLE -- The 26th annual Reedville Fishing Derby enjoyed beautiful weather for fishing the middle Chesapeake Bay.

The volunteers of Smith Point Sea Rescue, based in Reedville, have pulled people from the water after vessels capsized, found lost boaters all across the Chesapeake Bay and rescued folks from dead batteries, failed engines and groundings hundreds of times over 35 years.

Mrs. Virginia Johns "Jenny" Williams, 79, died Thursday, April 30, 2009, at the Brian Center, Low Moor, near Covington.

For generations, flat-bottom and deadrise skiffs have provided stable platforms for commercial fishermen working the waters of Chesapeake Bay.
