Local Schools Get Award from President Clinton for Serving Healthy Lunches
Eight schools in Redondo Beach area have been honored by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation and President Clinton at this year's As the latest phase of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's strong school nutrition standards take effect, the Alliance for a Healthier Generation honored 250 schools for becoming healthier places. Clinton shared data showing how the Alliance paved the way for healthier school meals through a series of agreements brokered with leading school food manufacturers in 2011, prior to federal nutrition standards taking effect.

CA: Federal Grant Will Fund Improvements to Willowbrook Metro Station
Sept. 13--On Saturday, federal transportation officials will announce more than $10 million to refurbish one of the Los Angeles County transit system's busiest light-rail stations. The $10.25-million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation will partially fund several changes to the Willowbrook-Rosa Parks station in South Los Angeles.

AES Submits 9,600 Signatures in Support of Harbor Village Development
AES today submitted 9,600 Redondo Beach signatures in support of the Harbor Village Initiative, which would allow its local power plant to be shut down and the site transformed into a vibrant "Harbor Village," with a balanced mix of homes, businesses and permanent open space, creating jobs and an important new source of revenue for the city. "The law provides 180 days to qualify an initiative in Redondo Beach and we're proud to have gathered thousands more signatures than are needed in just over four weeks," said AES Southland's Eric Pendergraft.

LA Kings Run to force street closures in Redondo Beach Saturday
The LA Kings 5K Run/Walk will force the closure of several streets in south Redondo Beach on Saturday morning. The Redondo Beach Police Department will begin enforcing no parking zones at 6 a.m. All vehicle traffic will be prohibited on the race course beginning at 7:45.

Water District Treasurer Sentenced to Six Months Jail Time for Embezzlement
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Thomas Sokolov immediately sentenced Ronald Craig Smith, 55, to 180 days in county jail and five years probation. Smith pleaded guilty to one count of conflict of interest and submitted his resignation to the water district today, as one of the conditions of his plea deal.

The body of a 21-year-old man who went missing while swimming with friends before dawn today in Redondo Beach has been recovered. The Lawndale resident, an inexperienced swimmer, was found at 10:06 a.m. just 100 feet from where he was last seen.

The body of a 21-year-old missing swimmer was recovered off the coast of Redondo Beach on Saturday, authorities said. The man, who was identified by family as Marlon Fajardo of Lawndale, had disappeared about 4 a.m. while wading in chest-deep water with two to four friends near the Knob Hill lifeguard tower, authorities said.
