Inmate fire crews from five North Coast conservation camps gathered at the Eel River Conservation Camp near Redway last week for three days of inspections and testing to make sure they are ready to fight fires in the coming fire season.

For the last eight years, the Eel River Valley Foundation has dedicated proceeds raised at its annual "A Gift of Love" benefit gala to Suzanne's House in Fortuna.

The nearly bankrupt U.S. Postal Service has backed off of a plan that would have closed eight local post offices, but it will instead reduce the hours at 23 locations in Humboldt County under a proposal unveiled Wednesday.
