The San Diego County Board of Supervisors was expected today to sew up a $15.5 million plan that would merge 12 rural fire agencies by 2012.

County supervisors will consider a sweeping new plan this month to merge a dozen rural fire agencies and strengthen fire and emergency medical services in unincorporated areas of the county.

Eight new four-wheel-drive fire engines, purchased by the county for $3 million, have been delivered to a variety of volunteer fire departments in the backcountry of North and East counties.
