I'm from Northern New Mexico and have made that trip several times a year for the last 27 years. It can be a long and boring drive. It only takes a split second of inattentiveness or a slick road to lose control of a car. It is so sad to hear of the loss of such a young life. She seemed to be working at creating a life and future for her self. I'm sure she will be sorely missed. My heart, thoughts, and prayers go out to her family and friends.

Sad but what made her drive into the median? Was there a cell phone? Makeup? You see an awful lot of drivers paying no attention at all to the road.

Blown out tire? Animal running across road? Another agressive driver changing lanes too close? Warning light on dash along with alarm went off because the emergency brake had been nudged by accident and she over compensated for the speed she was going? High wind? Bird flew into her windshield? Who knows? She is not here to tell us.

May her family remember her best qualities and that she loved them.

I am from Questa and graduated a year after Melissa. She was the most beautiful person and loved life with a passion. She is deeply missed by all of our community.
By the way Joe there could be 100 reasons she went off the road. Please do not make senseless remarks about someone you didn't know. She was a careful driver and made one mistake which cost her her life.
Thank you all so much for your kind words. It helps in this devastating time.

More than likely, Melissa was reaching for the cell phone to either answer the call from a friend or to try to text. Let's not make this into "A Wonderful Life" episode. Read the accident report. Perhaps it was drug related and there was a reaction? It amazes me how many people just want to gloss over the obvious. Why would a bright girl deliberately drive into the median and lose control. Stop chirping about angels and wings and get a frigging grip. As long as you are on this Earth, you are responsible for your life. Beautiful person, beautiful dreams, beautiful thoughts...all are for naught unless you take control of your actions. Geeze.

Roberta, how dare you mock a horrible accident. I feel sorry for you, you act so perfect and can cast stones but you forget that you (as we all do) live in a glass house. When you cast judgement on someone else 10 judgements come back upon you when you least expect it. Melissa WAS a bright girl and a accident cannot change that. We all have faults and make mistakes and I am sure that you have not gone through life without making a mistake. I hope that you never have to face the death of a loved one through an accident. This death has hurt so many people and broken so many hearts and with your rude asnine remarks you only add salt to the wound. Do not comment on the death of someone you didn't know. You didn't know Melissa and if you did I can assure you these hateful and redundant words would never have crossed your mind let alone your pathetic excuse for a mouth. Go on and be miserable in your own right and let our beloved Melissa, who is now OUR angel to rest.

I will pray for your soul Roberta... I grew up with Melissa and she was like another sister to me. She never partied and drugs were the farthest thing from her mind. Just because alot of accidents are drug related doesn't mean they all are. Melissa was driving back to try and make it to school because she was responsible. Unless you are completely ignorant you must know that the smallest mistakes can have devistating results. Death is no laughing matter and I would ask for you to be at least a little simpathetic to the fact that the world has lost such a beautiful person. If you have nothing but rude remarks to post please don't post them. I pray that when your time comes you realize that this matter is not to be taken lightly. So, I will pray for you that God may be more kind to you than you are to others on your day of judgement.

Time is hurtling towards Christmas Day and it seems that you're in a panic about how you're going to get everything done in time. You may even have reached the stage where you've ground to a halt because you don't know what to do first. So take a deep breath, calm down and do things one at a time.
