Quakertown rental inspections have to wait

Quakertown Borough Council voted on an ordinance to regulate rental units, but the proposal was delayed at least a month for lack of a unanimous vote.

How much will the inspections cost? Nothing is for free. Will they employ a full time housing inspector with benefits to keep up on the rental turnover in Quakertown? Will they charge for inspections? Who will pay for that, the tenet, the landlord or the taxpayers? Will the landlor have to get on an inspection waiting list to rent an apartment and lose rent money? If the landlord pays, the cost will roll down to the tenet with an INCREASE IN RENT. All you need is people to report slum lords. That's it. Free, simple, done. Oh, wait, I guess they think renters aren't capable. Well require landlords to hand out a form of who to contact in such cases. There, again, free, simple, easy.

Oh, and if they site saftey concerns of children for parents who don't report, then they must make private homeowners participate as well! Just cause you own doesn't mean you wouldn't run an unsafe extension cord!!!

This article is full of idiots...

"Inspections become a nuisance"...how so? An inspection would occur once every three years.

''Everything I own is there. Just because I don't have the means to buy a house doesn't mean my apartment isn't my family's home,'' Byelich said.

Nobody said it wasn't your home....this is to ensure that the landlords is keeping up with fire and safety codes. They are not rooting through your private items and food pantry.

To me, it seems like a bunch of crybabies who have something to hide or don't feel like keeping their properties maintained.

Loren Byelich, who rents on S. 11th Street, said he is offended by the proposed ordinance because it seems to reduce renters to ''second class citizens.''

Offended?! How can you be offended if the inspections are meant to ensure that the place is safe, especially if you have kids of 4 and 1 years old. I'm sure you aren't an inspector youreself...quiet down and maybe you would learn something. Are you afraid of someone seeing your hidden weed stash in the ceiling? Cmon'

Many other communities have this ordinance in place, it is successful and their aren't as many crybabies as the landlords and tennants in this area.

I am so glad I moved from Quakertown. A once great town has turned into a joke!

I can see the importance of inspections before a unit is rented and the ability of renters to call someone if THEY feel there is a problem that the landlord is not fixing. BUT why invade some ones home just because an amount of time has passed by.

I never had anything to hide but I would never want some one poking around my home just because they could.

I see your point but what if an apartment doesn't change hands for many years. While my current landlord is fine, I have had landlords in the past who make me think this is a good idea. I could see my former landlords not taking any complaints to the local authorities very well. I probably would have been looking for new place.

Wasn't there a place condemed because it was found to be dangerous that started all of this?

Your darn right you will be looking for a new place, that comes with the territory. Life is not like a disney movie, the guy that blows the whistle normally is looking for a new place to live.

There was a drug bust on Front that started all of this. I would like to say thank you to the owners of that property, I hope to see you out on the street some time so we can have a talk about what you have cost your fellow landlords in town, both financially and in aggrevation. Thanks a hole, hope you get cancer!

As a transgendered person, I face housing discrimination. I would hate to have my landlord have another opportunity to evict me. If my apt is not to my standard i'll speak to him about it. I wouldn't need an official to go through my closets and drawers to find problems. I'm glad I don't live in Quakkertown.

listen, Victor...it is needed and it will be done. Since you don't live here, you don't know the area and the slumlords who control these places.

Many other cities and towns have this program implemented and it works great.

People are so stubborn for changes, especially when they are beneficial for yourself.

Nobody is going to look in your closet and personals. They are looking for code violations.
Is there fire escapes, do you have bugs and rats,
Is your sewer line up to code?
The building next to mine has apartments and one of them is so cluttered there are paths to walk through. Yes it is his stuff but it is also a fire
hazzard. If that place goes up there are other familys in that dwelling and my house is 8 feet away. That is what they are looking for. Noone cares if you didn't wipe your baseboards.
When I rented I asssumed that the place I rented was safe and up to code. Now renters will know for sure

When I drive through Quakertown I do not see slums, but I'll take your work for it. If the inspection is for saftey only then maybe the people will not be upset. I would not want to have them come unanounced but my apt is not cluttered. Well, good luck Quakertown dwellers with this. I do not have it in Dublin.

Also, "Man Here"...it's Victoria... I can prove it to you....

How paranoid and backward thinking are these people? The renters who don't want their apartments inspected are the same people who would immediately start a lawsuit against their landlord and the borough if something went wrong in their apartment.

Heres another reason why slumlords need to be held accountable for their properties and why inspections are needed.

My apt is always clean and ready for vistors but I am glad they would properly announce their intention prior to arriveing.

So if they are looking out for the occupant's safety, why not inspect private homes as well? Do we just assume that homeowners take pride in the condition of their property? Take a look around the town, and Richland Township, and I think you'll find your answer. Lots of dilapidated properties, but I don't hear any talk about inspections on them. And how many homeowners make improvements without getting permits? Should we check on that, too? If you live in/own half of a twin, and the guy next door decides to rewire half his house without getting inspections or permits, doesn't that endanger your half as well?

This needs to be thought out some more.

Do you f*cking people do any research before you bitch. Obviously not or you wouldn't be saying the stupid things you are saying.

No inspector has the right to go through your personal belongings. The inspections being proposed by the borough are for safety violations only, not if you have stains in your underwear.

You freakin' people go off half cocked and make a mountain out of a molehill.

The reason not to inspect private homes is because they are not a business. Why does everyone complain about rental inspections but not commercial property inspections. It is the same thing. Both are businesses and should be treated the same. To demand inspections of privately owned homes is a violation of citizens rights. Unfortunately Dennis Lawrence and his cronies can not get that through their thick skulls.

P.S. Dan Williams is spineless. He states that he feels this needs another 2 years or so to research. This has already been going on for almost 2 years. If the old guard can't get this right in that amount of time then maybe in the next election they should be replaced.
