Eagle Bluff awarded grant for clean energy project
The Southeast Region Clean Energy Resource Team (CERT) has awarded Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center of rural Lanesboro a $5,000 grant for its clean energy project "Green Markets: Testing Distributed, Perennial Biomass Energy Systems in Southeastern Minnesota."
One of Eagle Bluff ELC's goals is to become carbon neutral in terms of electricity and heat use. One step in getting there is a plan to study the feasibility of using local perennial grasses in the campus' combined heat and power (CHP) system.

Ethanol tanker rollover raises
Things could have been much worse, but luckily no lives were lost or further damage occurred when an ethanol transport truck run by Cargo Transport Inc. rolled over and spilled ethanol at noon on Thursday, July 3.
The single-vehicle accident occurred about one-eighth of a mile southwest of Lanesboro on Highway 16. The Freightliner tractor was driven by 46-year-old Rita Benes of Bryant, Wis.
The Minnesota State Patrol accident report said the semi-tanker was eastbound on Highway 16. It went to the right, rolled, hit a bluff and then came to rest on its top.

Cities look at flood recovery and 'amazing' efforts
Two area city councils on the South Branch Root River meet in regular session Monday evening, June 16. Updates on the flooding on starting one week earlier, on Sunday, June 8, came up at both meetings in Preston and Lanesboro.
Preston
City administrator Joe Hoffman and public works director Bill Cox gave the Preston City Council a flood update during the June 16 meeting. Hoffman said that flood information packets and surveys were distributed by four teams to the locations affected by the flood on Monday, June 8.

Mother surprised with trip to 'Oprah' from her daughter
Not many daughters will try for more than three years to get the perfect Mother's Day gift for her mom. But that's exactly what Jennah Marzolf of Rochester did for her mother, Deneen Krohn of rural Lanesboro. And what Krohn had dreamed of - but thought impossible - was a trip to be in the Chicago studio audience for the taping of an "Oprah" show.
The idea started taking shape for Marzolf when she was about 8 or 9, and she asked both of her parents, "If you could go anywhere, or meet anyone, where or who would it be?"

Wenden Recovery Services opens new outreach in Preston
“The Rochester program is with the Department of Corrections, and it's a year-long stimulant-specific program for methamphetamine and crack cocaine users. It's very similar to drug court - the addicts have a choice between prison or treatment”
Patience, patients and independence....
"We are a chemical dependency outpatient program. We provide treatment to people suffering from alcohol and drug addictions, alcohol abuse and drug abuse," explained addictions recovery counselor Randy Hoffman, of newly-opened Wenden Recovery Services, at 124 Main St. in downtown Preston.
Wenden's new clinic was in the setup process for more than a year. Hoffman and intake coordinator Karyn Johnson spent that time investigating how important the clinic could be in Preston. Read more
