Assistant Library Director Ted Johnson says people flocked to the new library and checked out 34,000 items in October 2009, a 13 percent increase over the 30,000 they checked out in October 2008. Libraries aren't just for hard-copy books any more. "Items" checked out included DVDs and CDs as well.

Cowboy gets headstone 76 years after fulfilling his dream

Juanita Clarke Chesley probably is the only person alive who remembers her brother, Irvin Clarke.
So she was relieved beyond words last week when she finally replaced Irvin's long-gone wooden headstone with a new granite one at Citizens' Cemetery in Prescott.

Young Prescott area musicians to play in Symphony Guild competition
Four talented youngsters will compete this week in the Yavapai Symphony Guild's Young Musician Competition, which delivers substantial scholarship money to students in grades 6-12. The top winners in each of four categories (voice, piano, woodwind/brass, and strings) within two divisions - grades 6-9 and grades 10-12 - will perform Tuesday, Nov. 10, in a free Young Musicians' Concert at 10 a.m. at the Prescott Adult Center.

Veterans Hall of Fame honors Dewey's Alfonso Santillan, Jr.
Former Dewey resident Alfonso Santillan, Jr. is one of 19 Arizona veterans who, this past Friday, received the highest honor awarded by the Governor for their contributions to fellow veterans and Arizona citizens. Challengers sweep election for Prescott council; tax protection, home rule win
PRESCOTT - The election "avalanche" that occurred in 2007 appears to have reversed itself in this year's Prescott City Council race.
By margins ranging from 820 to 1,660 votes, three challengers - John Hanna, Tammy Linn, and Steve Blair - combined to remove Robert Luzius, the last incumbent remaining in the race, from the Prescott City Council.

City Council approves new contract, without raise, for Norwood
PRESCOTT - The Prescott City Council Tuesday took on a matter that it has put off for months - the annual employment review of City Manager Steve Norwood.
And by unanimous action, the council agreed to renew the manager's contract for another year, running retroactively from the beginning of July 2009 through the end of June 2010.

Mass swine flu vaccination delayed till December
The Yavapai County Board of Health met Tuesday to discuss H1N1 swine flu clinics in Yavapai County and distribution of vaccine.
"Usually we have zero cases of the flu at this time of year, but this year we have thousands of lab-confirmed cases of the flu," said Richard Resendes, director of Yavapai County Community Health Services.

Amnesiac man reunites with family members
PRESCOTT - Family members on Friday identified an unknown man found June 25, 2009, in Clarkdale as 49-year-old James Inocencio from Midlothian, Texas.
Volunteers from an out-of-state group who help in missing person cases contacted Yavapai County Sheriff's office detectives after they found a missing person report out of Texas that closely described the unidentified man found in Yavapai County, the Sheriff's Office said.

Small swine flu vaccine shipment lets county give doctors some
PRESCOTT - Yavapai County Community Health Services received 5,000 doses of H1N1 (swine) flu vaccination Monday.
However, Robert Resendes, YCCHS director, said this will not enable Health Services to conduct its walk-in swine flu vaccination clinics scheduled for today, Nov. 3, for those people identified by the U.S Centers for Disease Control & Prevention to be at the greatest risk of suffering from H1N1 infection.

Supervisors OK credit card payments, camping on 2-acre parcels
PRESCOTT - The Yavapai County Board of Supervisors on Monday gave a thumbs up to the Development Services Department's request to let the public use credit cards to pay for permits and fees.
The department would sign a merchant agreement with Bank of America to process credit card charges through the bank. The new policy starts Jan. 1, 2010.

Deputies arrest man after chase in Dewey-Humboldt
DEWEY-HUMBOLDT - Yavapai County Sheriff's deputies arrested an armed man Saturday afternoon after he allegedly threatened neighbors and led deputies on a chase, YCSO spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn said.
Deputies responded at approximately 11 a.m. to a reported family fight in the 2800 block of Dana Street. Before reaching the location, the girlfriend of Bruce Burger, 46, warned deputies that the suspect was distraught and armed with a rifle inside the home.

Talk of the Town: Global warming data not current
At the Oct. 19 film showing and discussion on climate change at Yavapai College, the Courier quoted business professor Terry Lovell as saying that "cockroaches make more CO2 (carbon dioxide) than we do."
I emailed Dr. Lovell to ask where he learned this fact. He promptly wrote back saying that the Courier had misquoted him, and that it was termites, not cockroaches that dwarfed the human greenhouse gas contribution. His source? A paper in Science from 1982.
