N.Y. kids greet hosts in Pottsville

Danielle Garner wasn’t supposed to meet the Schappell family. But when the 14-year-old Brooklyn resident’s assigned Fresh Air Fund family failed to show up at the designated Scranton drop-off point four years ago, she thought she was headed back to New York without a countryside vacation. At the same time, Dennis and Lisa Schappell, a Hamburg couple with four children, discovered their visiting child also failed to show up at their Hamburg meeting place. When a Fresh Air Fund coordinator told Lisa there was a child on a bus without a host family, she asked if she’d be willing to take a chance on a new visitor.
