Commission hears concerns about Henderson

Residents with the town of Henderson appeared before the Mason County Commission with concerns about the town's current mayor. Jack McCoy, former mayor of Henderson, told Commissioners Miles Epling, Rick Handley and Tracy Doolittle, he believed Mayor Tony Cox was "not competent" and should be removed.

Community rallies behind young family

Recently, Brandy and Brandon Sweeney of Point Pleasant were expecting their third child, a daughter, to join their two sons. Shortly before their daughter's birth, Brandy become ill and was diagnosed with a heart condition which only occurs in one in 10,000 pregnancies.

Maintenance Director Cameron Moffett first informed the board of how this year's maintenance teams function, which are comprised of two employees each for each team that are assigned to specific buildings on certain days.

Arraignments held in grand jury cases

Some of those receiving indictments by the September term of the grand jury appeared before Judge David W. Nibert on Monday in Mason County Circuit Court. Issues of arraignment, including entering of pleas to charges, discussion of bond matters and hearing dates, were heard for the following: Charles Aaron Baird, 38 , Henderson, wanton endangerment, brandishing a deadly weapon times four, assault, possession of deadly weapon on premises of educational facilities, arraignment hearing set for Sept.

For the record -

Gary O. Lane, 49, Point Pleasant, has entered a plea of guilty to the felony offense of conspiracy. Lane was charged in a joint indictment, along with Kevin W. Bonecutter, age and address unreported, with breaking and entering, petit larceny, conspiracy back in May. The indictment is in relation to a January incident which allegedes a break in at a building used and occupied by WV District of the UPCI.

Sheriff's department to conduct sobriety checkpoint

The Mason County Sheriff's Department, with support of the Commissions on Drunk Driving Prevention, will conduct a sobriety checkpoint on Sept 6. The checkpoint will be operational between the hours of approximately 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. The checkpoint will be in the 2700 block of Jackson Avenue in Point Pleasant. Officers will be briefly stopping all traffic at the checkpoint, and will distribute informational brochures as well as checking drivers for signs of intoxication.
