POINCIANA, Fla. (PHN) -- June 13, 2008 -- For the second time in a row, local U.S. House Representative Adam Putnam (R) voted against extending unemployment benefits for his constituents in the Poinciana area.

With over 1,700 in this area who have lost their homes to foreclosure, inflation in gas and food prices, and well-paying jobs located in such remote areas as Orlando, Poincianans are feeling the heat of an elected official who appears to vote primarily for self-interest and not in the best interest of those he claims to represent.

In his self-defense, Putnam said, "not all ... have joblessness problems." Certainly he doesn't, at least not for now; however it is an election year.

POINCIANA (PHN) | Buried in its pages, the Orlando Sentinel posted nothing more than a paragraph on recent articles of impeachment against U.S President George W. Bush. Prompted by U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, a former Democratic presidential contender, news of the impeachment process has been largely ignored by the media.

POINCIANA (PHN) | While the state of Florida was featured in a video released in the United Kingdom showing torture of prison inmates and Governor Charlie Crist appears ignorant of the problem, a new report was released by the Orlando Sentinel indicating the continued existence of guard-sponsored fight clubs.

The widely distributed video from the U.K. shows evidence of torture in Florida prisons perpetrated by corrections offiers. It compares the inhumane treatment of prisoners to that suffered by those in Guantanamo Bay.

Poinciana is subject to the Florida Department of Correction's Region 3, which covers both Osceola and Polk Counties. No reports exist as to the extent to which prisoner's from Poinciana are subjected to torture.
