Tattered U.S. flag raises flap in Plantation
“We have people inspect our flag every week to make sure it's not ripped and that it is hanging properly”
The American flag typically inspires pride and patriotism, but the tattered Old Glory at the corner of Sunrise Boulevard and State Road 7 has devolved into a symbol of shame. The torn flag flagrantly flaps over Rick Case Hyundai, its frayed stripes dancing in different directions.
'I think it's disgusting,' said Bill Kling, a Plantation resident who chairs the Broward County Veterans' Council, which represents about 50 South Florida veterans organizations. 'It's their patriotic duty to show respect for the symbol of the flag and what it means to America.' Read more

Emergency call shows frantic hunt for police station before killing
“It's hard to comment on this because this happened so fast”
Driving in Plantation, a frantic Olidia Kerr Day called 911, said she was being chased by a gunman and repeatedly asked where the local police station was. Two 911 operators, in Sunrise and Plantation, who handled the April 25 call, couldn't immediately tell her. That's according to a recording of Day's 911 call that authorities released Tuesday and other recordings released last week. Minutes later, at about 7:30 p.m., Day was able to make it to the police station at 451 NW 70th Terrace without help from the operators. The gunman, following close behind, got out of his car and fatally shot her near the entrance. Then, with a suicide note addressed to police in his pocket, gunman Carlos B. Cevallos, 48, took his own life, officials said. Read more
