This old house might be historic
A few years ago, there was a bus that would stop every so often in front of Willard Knitter's house in Plainfield Township.
No one would get out; the bus would just sit there, and then move on. The people on the bus were tourists, looking at various historic sites around Northampton County.
But how historic is this house?
The Slate Belt Heritage Center thinks the home may have once been a tavern owned by a man named Adam Dietz, who settled in Plainfield in 1745. If that's the case, it's probably the oldest building in the Slate Belt, and one of the oldest in the county, even older than Easton's Bachmann Publick House, built in 1753.

In pageant circles, the question is relevance
It wasn't the picture of pageant life Rachel Brooks imagined when she first donned the Miss Pennsylvania crown last year and set out for the Miss America title.
In the pageant's new reality TV format, Brooks found herself leaping over obstacles in a horse arena, taking heat from judges for failing to spot her state flag, and diving into a pool -- a penalty for failing to answer correctly a question about a 19th century World's Fair invention.
''It was definitely not your mom's Miss America,'' said the 24-year-old Broomall, Delaware County native, who will pass her crown to the next Miss Pennsylvania on Saturday night at Nazareth Area High School.

A bundle of court cases lodged against John Snuggs, the suspected British-accented robber from Plainfield Township, was sent to Northampton County Court on Tuesday, just one week after a federal grand jury indicted him in connection with a string of robberies in the Poconos.
There could be even more charges. Snuggs is a suspect in two other bank robberies in Monroe County, said Lt. Brian Kimmins of the Stroud Area Regional Police.
Kimmins said a detective in his department is working with an FBI agent to find the masked man who robbed the M&T Bank at N. Ninth and Ehler streets, Stroud Township, twice in three months. Read more

Suspect in heists charged again
The suspected British-accent robber, charged in connection with a string of hold-ups in convenience stores and banks in Northampton County, apparently extended his crime spree into New Jersey, police said.
On Friday, Lopatcong Township Police Department charged John S. Snuggs, 41, of Plainfield Township, with first-degree armed robbery. Police say he walked into the Baker Federal Credit Union at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 24, 2007, and demanded money from tellers.
Though no gun was shown, Snuggs allegedly held his hand inside his jacket pocket, leading tellers to believe he was carrying a weapon, police said. Police say he stole $6,740 and ran away. Read more
