That’s a story we probably would have missed had it not been for monitoring Paris Topix. Bloggers appear to be amused that information can appear on the site before it makes the newspaper. But gee, folks, this is, after all, the age of technology.

1 Way to go Ed! We love TOPIX. I read TOPIX all around the areas I travel into; some communities participate, some do not, but it's catching on. It's real interesting. You can get the 'feel' of the citizens, in general, or what the 'hot' issues are. You are raising 'the bar' for community information. |

3 LMFAO! Lewd, vile, disgusting, harassing, stalking and downright filthy posting goes on on Topix on a daily basis. Who are you kidding? People report posters, posts, threads and vulgar polls and you people do hardly anything and you never ban the people who are the most offensive. Why should anyone try reporting anything to Topix when nothing is ever done? Now you suddenly feel like heroes and the Supermen of the web but you don't really care about this community at all on a day to day basis. It's publicity and as many clicks as possible that matter to you people and you laugh all the way to the bank. Let's at least be honest. |

1 I've seen your posts in the past and I have to admit you really hit the nail of the head on this one. As a local community Topix editor, I have tried everything that you stated, all without any response from the main Editors, much the less owners of Topix, including any effort at resolving the trash I see on here almost everyday. It is evident that Topix either does not have the technical support staff to follow up or the intention to police Topix to maintain it's implied family friendly environment. Sad but that seems to be the truth. Very disappointed in Topix management... |

1 we do thank the people for doing a good job .BUT you guys really need to put some filters in place with some of the down right nasty comments on some threads.just go on offbeat or top stories and read some of the crap there. we e-mail you guys all the time and use the abuse button but to no avil. what gives?give the manger of each topix fourm the power to delete if only temp. tell one of you ex. editors have the chance to look it over and make the finial vote.we would really like something to be done.thank you. |

1 Hello Moon. I didn't mean to be contentious here but the hypocrisy was too blinding for me. Yeah, I've been posting for over a year on the Immigration Forum and I've seen some of the most vulgar and filthy posts I've ever seen on the Web on that forum. Maybe other forums are more civil and abide by Topix rules but nonetheless, Topix admin. has not been responsive in getting rid of offensive posters and setting an example to others. I have often thought that Topix uses the most notorious posters just for click value. I really do believe it's a numbers game and there is very little concern for real people in this cyber-reality. Hope I never said anything offensive to you. I have a reputation for getting down and dirty myself when pushed to the limit. I blame it on that Irish b**** inside me. LOL! I was an Editor myself until one of my fellow posters (what a dear) reported me to Topix and I got the E removed.....politics involved too though. That really pissed me off because there were posters on that forum saying and doing things that were far more offensive than just using profanity and they never got banned. Double standard on Topix. Such is life on the Internet. |

The title I clicked on was "Topix forum help catch a predator in Texas", so how did topix help. From what I read the FBI caught the guy and a scanner listener posted it on topix. Did I miss something?

1 The general feeling is that our local newspaper (insert derisive snort here) rarely if ever covers any actual news that the public wants to know about. Our area is made up of several small towns, and everyone knows what everyone else is doing for the most part (except that pornography thing). When someone in the small town of Blossom, Tx saw official cars at a residence, they immediately posted the question on Topix regarding what was going on. Then someone else let us all know that they were listening on a police scanner (very popular in this area) and that the FBI was raiding a home and having something to do with pornography. The local newspaper editor then posted to Topix that the only way she knew of this event was because of Topix, then went on to insult most posters in our little community, and yet another thread was started. I have absolutely no idea how Topix editors consider themselves to have aided in catching a predator in Texas since the predator was already caught when the posting ensued, but the forum was successful in bringing to the attention of our "news editor" that a newsworthy event was taking place and that perhaps one of her reporters should possibly go out and do a story. Now, that should be as clear as mud. Thanks for listening. |

That's where I linked to this thread. Topix posted it on their homepage. I guess it's big news in Paris, Texas. EXCERPT: "I’m not going to be making any contributions, but the news staff will be keeping abreast of its postings for possible news stories, just as we try to keep informed of coffee and beauty shop gossip and the frequent anonymous “tips” received at The Paris News." Topix didn't do anything. They're simply trying to take credit for it. A news reporter from the Paris News read a post from someone who was tuned into a police scanner. The poster posted info about the perpetrator. The FBI was already on it. The Paris News really didn't get in on it until Friday because it was too late to run the story on Thursday when it all went down. It's the Paris News and Topix both trying to take credit for doing absolutely nothing, except doing their job of reporting the news. Slow news day in Paris, Texas is my take on it and one news source kissing up to another one. |
