1 You obviously do not know what you are talking out. It IS ALL about what they wear. Many cannot buy name brands and are very intimidated. Regular slacks and shirts would help the entire learning situation better. I taught 37 years and I have witnessed it first hand. |

1 It would definitely be an eye opener. I wish some of the politicians who are so quick to pass judgement on education would also spend about a week in a public school. Unfortunately anytime one comes to visit, the administrators take them around to the GT classrooms and have them observe a show put on just for their benefit. Now back to the subject of uniforms. Excellent idea!!!! I can't believe a teacher actually said that clothing has never been a factor in a classroom. Dress codes have never been enforced fairly nor equally. Some kids bend the rules every day and get by with it. I personally am sick and tired of looking at butt cracks on 13 year olds because their tight jeans are low cut and when they sit down their too short tops ride up and expose their backside. The boys love it though. It's also heartbreaking to watch the kids who don't have money to buy the latest styles come to school and be picked on and teased because of it. The first half of the day involves dealing with clothing issues. After lunch, they have either been sent to ISS for a dress code vioation or mom has brought something else to wear. As a teacher, dealing with issues like these takes time that could better be spent teaching. I've seen many uniforms that are very cute and the students look nice in them. We bought our daughter one of the khaki skorts, white shirt and navy pullover sweater to wear with knee socks strictly because we thought it was cute. It came from The Children's Place and cost a fraction of what other outfits cost. The quality was also outstanding It still looked as nice a year later as it did when it was bought. I hear teachers at my school constantly say they wish the district would go to school uniforms. Khaki or navy pants, skirts, skorts or walking shorts with navy, white or red shirts would still give the students choices. |

1 If your daughter was so cute in the uniform, why did you not buy 5 outfit's and "make" her wear one each day of the week!!! If I want to buy my child a $150.00 pair of jean's, a $250.00 purse, a $75.00 top then that is my business. I tell them if you want to continue wearing this type of clothing the rest of your life then you had better study, get in a great college, and find a great job to pay for the better things in life. Hopefully this cycle will continue in the future. If the people that are poor cannot afford the better things then maybe it will be a challenge to them to study hard, get in a great college and find a great job! |

1 When the uniform does not have to purchased at a specific store, does that not still cause "social class" problems because some buy at Walmart and someone else might go to a store like Belk? |

1 Not that I noticed. I suppose the differences weren't quite as blatant or obvious. And I imagine that more parents saw this as an opportunity to spend money on other things and therefore fewer parents went to the high dollar stores for kids uniforms. At least, not from what I personally witnessed. Overall, it really eased up the situation considerably. |

1 It must be wonderful to live in your world. It's probably your snotty little brat that is making the others feel bad. You should spend a few weeks in a school and just watch. Explain to that child who doesn't even have water at their home how they can go to college and get a great job and improve their life. Explain to them that you know they have lice crawling in their hair but if they will just focus and study their vocabulary words they can go to college and better their life. Explain to them that you know they haven't eaten since they had their free lunch yesterday but it's 2nd period and they need to complete their worksheet so they can go to college and make something of theirself. Get the picture???? After you do all this, you can sit down at your computer and spend about an hour filling out the forms online for Child Protective Services only to have them respond in a month or so and tell you that at 13 years of age, the child is considered "fit for flight". In other words, at 13 they are old enough to survive on the streets if it is too bad. You need to step out of your perfect world and go check out the world a teacher lives in. Oh, and by the way, there are usually a few walking the halls that are dressed in t-shirts with swatiskas and other inappropriate wording that you have to deal with. |

I tend to agree with the findings of David Brunsma and Kerry Rockquemore. "Instituting a uniform policy can be viewed as analogous to cleaning and brightly painting a deteriorating building in that on the one hand, it grabs our immediate attention but on the other, is, after all, really only a coat of paint."
It doesn't address the real problems. 1 Yep, you seem to fit the bill for what Russ T Cobb said about the "hold-over hippies" and their "You can't tell me or my kid what to do" attitude. I see plenty of them in my ministry to a county jail here in OK. Seems somebody IS telling them what to do NOW though. That's what's wrong with education more than dress and some other issues. My wife teaches; much of her time is spent after school hours trying to help kids with difficult home lives......all for NO extra pay btw. |

1 JMO Excuse me. What do you know about my family? Have you ever met any of my family? If you think I'm a joke, fine. You are entitled to your opinion. But leave my family out of it unless you have some idea of what you are talking about. Rusty Hedges |
