Versions of fatal shooting at odds
“Yeah, he was different and could seem weird, but he wasn't out here hurting people”
A 46-year-old man shot and killed by officers Saturday night suffered from a bipolar disorder and appeared frightened and confused when police confronted him on a busy residential street, neighbors and family ... via Daily Breeze

"Residents said four people from the crowd were arrested for yelling at officers and video footage of the event was confiscated".
That says a lot right there. Long Beach and Orange County are both out of control. LAPD was once the dirty word in Police - now they may be running in third place. Don't mean to be rude, but Torrance isn't doing so hot lately either - they all need to clean up their act. |

It seems the police tried to subdue him without killing him at first. They used batons and taser Why the taser was not able to take him down has to be answered. He was not has harmless as his family thinks unfortuanately. He must have put up one hell of a fight. I'm sure his family loved him but, why would they let him wander the streets in his mental state.

I am not really sure how to address you, but I must say you are a complete idiot. You don't know the first thing about the job... I feel for this guys family but I also feel for those Officers and for what they had to go through. Guys you did the right thing!!! You did what you had to do to ensure your safe return home. You have been taught well and your survival instinct turned on. You, as a Police Officer, do not have to be a victim no matter the circumstances. Remember you have support. Support your local Law Enforcement! |

bullcrap. who do the cops think they are? Murdering unarmed people? That shows they are just a bunch of sissys. Maybe we should have real men (or Women) as peace officers. Someone who can handle the job. |

how about they stop hiring p*ssies as cops? hire some who know how to subdue someone or at least have the physical capabilities to do so. what do they train these guys to do anyway? oh, besides shoot of course. obviously the baton training didnt work.

oh yea and did you see the video clip on the Times page? that cop with the massive gut is priceless... i can think of at least 100,000 of the top of my head that would "defend" me better than he can. can he even run a lap without huffing for an oxygen tank?

I always thought that the goal was to subdue not kill..what happened to shooting in the leg or arm? The police are out of control and if they are so scared they shouldn't be police.

For some reason, I don't think the newspaper told the whole story. Based on this story, the officers beat him, tasered him, then shot him. He was unarmed and took a football away from some children. That merits being shot and killed? Why wasn't back up called initially when he couldn't be subdued by the taser, or when the batons didn't work? It sounds like he was treated like a rabid animal. It doesn't make sense.

When we are 5 we learn that when a cop/parent says "stop", listen and do it. If any of these criminals would ever listen and stop, there wouldn't be any problems, kicking, tazering, or shootings. Once they don't "obey", then take what comes to you. They have chosen not to listen to the cops, who are trying to protect them and others. It lies on their own shoulders.

Certainly the kind loving gentle bipolar man was just keeping to himself though. Not causing any problems at all anyway. I'm glad he doesn't live on the hill.
|
|
I strongly doubt that you would fit the bill (no pun intended) though. |
|

That's probably why he's not an officer fred. Only a certain people git the bill, and a lot of them on the force don't.

THE LESSON FOR THE LAST "FEW MONTHS" IS DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT RAISEING YOUR HANDS IN A VIOLENT MANOR, TOWARD LAW ENFORCEMENT.."THEY WILL SHOOT "TO KILL", AND SAY THEY WERE "SCARED FOR THEIR LIVES"...THERES A RASH OF SCARY FOLKS COMMING OUT OF THE WOODWORKS..OR IS THAT SCARY POLICE ASSIGNED TO PROTECTING US??..

I agree with you!! If this guy was so nice, then why didn't his family and neighbors try to subdue him, get him in the house, take care of him, instead of calling the police. Second guess the police all you want, but they did their job. |
|
what is their job, killing an unarmed suspect on his stomach (according to roughly 40 eye witnesses)? you dont feel uncomfortable that they failed in using non-lethal force even as the guy was on his stomach on the ground? i'm not questioning the fact that the officers felt threatened. i was just under the false assumption that the PD hired people physically capable of subduing a man on his stomach on the ground. these posts on the breeze these days... steal a piece of candy and you lose all your rights and you deserve to die. |

I believe the Police, no loss

what's even worse is there were two officers.
for all those who say "support the police," you should do the same and call for improved training and a protocal refresher for all deputies. otherwise, these cops are no different than neighborhood bullies, harassing civilians and shooting when they feel the smallest inkling of threat. these days anything can be interpreted as "threatening." it's unfortunate that there are many trust-worthy cops out there who actually care about the people. their reputations are being tarnished by the sissies that outnumber a suspect and cant hold him down to the ground. |

Are the police becoming overly aggressive, or are the criminals becoming outwardly more violent? The breakdown in ethics, morality and civility has ruined many, once great, cities and is slowly draining the pride of our nation. The 'have-nots' love to justify the illegal actions of the members of their communities, and blame them on events from many generations ago. I especially love the pictures that are given to the media in most of these cases of what the families will refer to as 'gentle and peaceful' guys, and the picture is a gang pose. It is time for the moral majority to take back our country from these leaches on society. I am not afraid of the police in any way, and I teach my children respect for the badge, as it should be.

for those of you that might say he could have pulled a weapon in the scuffle, true. at the end of the day, there was a slip in protocol somewhere and none of us can fully judge since we don't have all the facts. one thing that is a fact is that they need more training. period.
if you engage in hand-to-hand combat, it better end quickly, especially with two officers versus 1 suspect. |

When someone is out of their minds, sometimes they are a lot stronger than a normal person. Exactly how much should an officer have to endure, they did try a batton and a taser. Should they wait for the guy to get one of their guns in the struggle. Unless you were in the fight you have no idea about adrenaline and what someone goes through. There are not enough police on the street, and that makes it very difficult to deal with a deranged individual, even if there are two officers on the scene. How come the family didn't make sure this person had their medication, why didn't they keep him safe. Seems funny how the people who called the police because they were afraid of this guy are now saying the police should have handled this differently. Arm chair quarterbacking, is easy. Try doing the job of protecting people like yourself, in bad neighborhoods. |
