Scorching hot weather in Southern California shows no sign of easing

Southern California continued roasting Sunday as the ongoing heat wave peaked, pushing temperatures well beyond 100 degrees in many areas, triggering power outages throughout the region as air conditioners, and the electrical grid, struggled to keep homes and businesses cool. No temperature records were broken in Los Angeles County Sunday, however Woodland Hills tied it's previous high-temperature of 107 degrees, recorded in 1971, Meteorologist Scott Sukup of the National Weather Service's Oxnard office said.

Chilean fruit expected to bridge seasonal transition

As the avocado market has gone global, outside factors such as currency exchange rates, country preferences and even domestic consumption play a role in how much exported fruit reaches the U.S. Such is the case with Chilean avocados, where growing domestic demand consumes about half of the crop and Europe is viewed as a preferred export market, said Dave Fausset, sales and category manager for Oxnard, Calif.-based Mission Produce Inc. Because of that, Chilean avocado importers expect this year's imports to be about half the size of last year's. "What happens with Chile is they provide a lot of fruit to Europe.
