At the Moapa Valley Town Advisory Board (MVTAB) last week, the top brass from the Clark County Fire Department (CCFD) came out and brought some real 'dollars-and-cents' numbers with them. Though these figures, which showed the revenues and expenditures of the Moapa Valley Fire District, were somewhat lacking in fine detail, they were still numbers that the District has long asked for but not been allowed to see. The presentation was meant to start a conversation about a proposal for a new property tax; a tax that, it was hoped, might pay for a full-time paramedic station in the community. Read more

Logandale Hobbyist Hosts Bowler Field Trip
“I have so much time and money invested in this display that I really want to share it with the community”
The first grade class at Grant Bowler Elementary school took a walking field trip on Friday, March 7 to see the many model train displays of Logandale resident, Gary Pearson. The students, teachers and a group of parent chaperones took a brisk walk to Pearson's home on the end of Liston Avenue east of the school.
Once there, they enjoyed the huge outdoor train display which Pearson has created in his front yard.
Like most hobbyists, Pearson enjoys sharing his work with others in the community. In past years he has opened his display for all in the community to come and see during the Christmas holidays. But these types of displays are a tremendous amount of work, Pearson said. Read more

Who Should Pay The Rural Sewer Bill?
“My concern is that the greatest factor affecting surface or ground water quality is population increase, and that effectively the existing residents of the urban area will be subsidizing continued explosive growth.”
Last week the inevitable occurred. Members of the area's environmentalist movement began pumping irrational and illogical dialogue into what had been a perfectly rational and logical discussion regarding the needed updates of aging rural sewer systems in Clark County.
The County is currently considering a modest increase in sewer rates across all ratepayers of the Clark County Water Reclamation District. This increase would help pay for needed replacements to deteriorating rural systems, like the one here in Overton. It is estimated that about $114 million is needed over the next five years to build treatment plants in the rural areas of the county. With the current rate structure, that would send the annual rates of an Overton household from $91.32 to $400. But under the universal rates being proposed, these rural improvements could be easily funded with no more than a $4 or $5 increase across all county ratepayers. The effect is much less significant because there is a much larger population over which the costs can be spread. Read more

Stunt Pilots Practice Acrobatics
By Catherine Ellerton
The call from an informant came in about 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, March 1. A couple of stunt pilots were practicing over the Mormon Mesa. Well, I ran out to my News Mobile and headed for the airport (being aware of the speed laws and proper driving techniques at all times).
I was advised by Kirby Chambliss' crew, Jason Resop (Crew Chief) and Lance Winter (Mechanic) that the pilots would be coming back to the airport within the next 5 to 10 minutes. So I decided to stick around and find out what was going on. Read more

Modern Pioneers Make Handcart Trek
“This Youth Conference was a success”
By Kylea McMurray
Local youth from all over Moapa Valley attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) Youth Conference over the weekend of February 29-March 1. This annual event was open to all youth aged 14 to 18, and is designed to provide a growing experience for youth.
This year's conference was a Pioneer Trek through an area in the Moapa Valley commonly called the Narrows. The overnight handcart hike through the desert provided an opportunity for the youth to experience a small taste of pioneer life as they worked hard to cook meals, push handcarts and build fires without modern day conveniences. Logandale Resident Helps Regional Boy Scouts
“Mr Adams was largely responsible for getting this group of men together.”
Towards the end of 2007, the Las Vegas Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America got some alarming news. In response to this, the council hurriedly sought a way to make up for the shortfall. A team of volunteers was quickly developed to organize a major fundraising event.
The Council held its first annual Sporting Clays Classic at the Desert Lakes Shooting Club in Las Vegas, on February 1-2. The event was a tremendous success raising $210,000 for the regional scouting program. Read more

Moapa Valley Credit Union Celebrates 50 Years
“Many hands went up, we took a class period that day and went over to the district office building and Masako signed up almost all of my class. As I recall, the fee to join at that time was only 25 cents.”

The officers of that first board were Harlan M. Lyon who served as President, Irvin Bryner who served as Vice President, Patricia Harris served as the Clerk, and Masako Y. Little Moapa Development Gives to MVHS Rodeo Club
“As soon as the
real estate market turns around we will go forward and are glad to be part of this community.”
Members of the Moapa Valley High School (MVHS) Rodeo Club met at the Rodeo Arena at the Clark County Fairgrounds on Monday, February 18, to receive a check from Little Moapa Development Partners, LLC. Little Moapa partners Steve Geiger and Ace Robison presented the check, for $1,000 to club president Cynthia Taylor, senior at MVHS and other officers and members of the club.
The MVHS Rodeo Club started at the beginning of the 2007--2008 school year after a 3-year hiatus due to lack of interest.
