Last Cook County district toboggan slide coming down

“But almost every time we opened the slide, there was always something that went wrong. There was no sense that this was a good way to utilize public funds.”

Construction crews on Tuesday morning began the arduous task of demolishing the Cook County Forest Preserve District's last toboggan slide, the nearly 80-year-old runs in Palos Township. via Chicago Tribune

Those slides were in PERFECT condition last time I saw them.

I LOOKED carefully at them because they were scheduled for demolition then.

PERFECT.

The only way $1.2 million could have been spent on them is if it all went to friends and family of the commissioners.

They were PERFECT.

10 political hacks got hired instead, so regular families will not be able to have fun in the winter anymore. If it not close to Stony Island it is not a good Idea to keep it. We read you loud and clear Todd-mister.

The toboggan slides just needed a tune up and general maintainance. I inspected them a week ago just to verify the BS being slung by the board. The Board is stacked Against the taxpayers if you can believe it.

They will pass out free condoms and hypodermic needles if you need them out there.

Help the low life degenerates and not the families policy

Don't let them "snow" you about this - Toddler's constituents don't toboggan...they're too busy killing each other on the South and West sides.
Let's see...representation on the Crook County Board...but we pay the most taxes.
Time for a revolution!
Damn right - it's well PAST "time for a revolution" by/of the electorate and tax-payers in Crook County.
So, it would appear - now that Stroger, Jones and all of the other people of color are in charge in/of Crook County, there will be no more public funding of facilities for ice-skating, ice-hockey, equestrian events, fencing, swimming pools, LaCross, etc, etc. But, there will be money - plenty of it, for ALL of Stroger's cousins, partonage armies of nerdowells, etc.
Nope, Crook County residents who pay taxes and aren't of Stroger's family better hope for lots and lots of blizzards this coming winter. Since the only time area residents wake up and vote the crooks out is when the snow stops the city/county.
In the meantime, we - taxpayers, should offer to pick up the tab for the Harold Washington Diet for Stroger and all of his cronies; you know, plenty of fatty foods - high in saturated fats that clog the arteries, and hope we can expedite them join'g Mr. Washington's remains as parts of the nitrogen cycle where they might do some good. They're certainly no good to any of us {tax-payers, non-cousins} while they're above the dirt. Maybe they can do some good when they're in the dirt - six feet under - maybe, only maybe...

Its too bad. I grew up in Palos, but I never had a chance to ride the slides. If the sledding hill has the same grade, thought, that would be a great hill to go down.

Couldn't Stroger have just hired some "supervisors" to help operate the slides at $120,000/yr each?

Ok, I kind of lost all belief in the story when I got to the quote by the Cook County FPD spokesman "There was no sense that this was a good way to utilize public funds." Based on the everyday actions of the Cook County board, that statement would seem to guarentee that the slides would stay open! So lets see, Claypool has friends that could run the slides, Stroger has relatives that could tear them down, where do we think the county put the "public" money. 1.2 million dollars is probably about half of what the Cook County government pays to Ghost Payrollers and relatives of county execs that aren't qualified for the jobs.

What's baloney is none of the Trib or Sun-Times reporters asked the Toddlers minions where they came up with the phony numbers. What a disgrace. Can we get some real reporters in this town? Where Mike Royko when you need him.

Since little "toddlers" aren't allowed on the tobaggan slides, the Toddler Stroger felt offended......

Cook county is such a joke. Shop out of the county. That will force their hand to raise taxes again. Eventually people will be angry enough to do something -- like vote.

This is bull crap, those slides are perfect and in mint condition!

They better keep everything else along with the observation deck and stairs. I love working out there.

Don't let a lot of these comments fool you. I saw the slides up close. Mint condition? The slides were a disaster waiting to happen. I am not a Stroger fan. But in tough economic times, he got this one right.

The slides probably had to go because if someone got a sliver or bruise on one the slides, there would have been a multi-million dollar lawsuit against Cook County for running an unsafe operation. Real sign of the times - they have to kid-proof everything!

Does this mean the Jensen slides on the NW side are still up?

Went there many times in my youth. Even tho I grew up in Cook County, pigs will fly before I spend another penny in that county.

They are so terribly corrupt, and unless its helps out a crony, or someone on the welfare roles, it goes by the by.

They could have easily charged an entrance fee, as well as have the guests sign a waiver of liability.

But its over, and there is nothing that can be done.

To the people in Cook County, my heart goes out to you. To the leaders in Cook County, just remember..Pay back is a B**ch.

I know none of you like Stroger, so anything he does gets panned whether good or not. I saw the slides this past winter. They looked like crap. Steps were broken and torn up. There is no chance I would have allowed my child on them. I am not a lawyer. But most waivers of liability are not worth the paper they are printed on. If the county lets someone use something unsafe, they are responsible. No matter how crooked Stroger is, these are tough economic times and not the time to fix a bunch of slides that can only be used for a few months out of the year. In addition I believe that some of you would critize Stroger no matter what he did. If he agreed to put a few million into the slides, you people would be bashing him for wasting taxpayer money and wondering which political cronies were getting the fixup money. I don't support Stroger. He is the typical Cook County crook, handing out patronage to his family. But this time he is right.

Very, very true. I personally believe liability had more to do with this than the condition of the tracks. Stroger is a total jerk, so Im glad I moved out of Crook county years ago.

You are obviously a lying mole. A troll.

Anyone who has ever been to Swallow Cliff knows that the steps are cut stone. And are in perfect condition.

I looked those slides over within the past month. Really looked them over. The ONLY problem I could find was a chipped corner of concrete at the very top behind the overlook building.

Not a crack or missing piece of concrete anywhere else. They were in flawless condition. The ramps were so good, people were running up them for exercise.

Absolute fiscal waste to tear down an asset like that. Sledding hills are anywhere the ground slopes. How many toboggan runs are there?

Fiscal, moral and mentally incompetent act.

And now we get the lying cook county apologists trying to explain away their incompetence.

Scum.

You are the scum. I know what I saw and I did not call anyone names while disagreeing with them. You are an anti-Stroger person, so why should anyone believe what you are saying?
