Hate crimes for Gays

Kobo said in the Oneida Forum:

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory?id=8894250 Physical attacks on people based on their sexual orientation will join the list of federal hate crimes in a major expansion of the civil rights-era law Congress approved Thursday and sent to President Barack Obama. The measure is named for Matthew Shepard, the gay Wyoming college student murdered 11 years ago. For or against? Why or why not? Discuss.

Indictment handed down in accident

In an indictment unsealed Monday, Andrew J. Ellis, 19, was charged with two counts of vehicular homicide.

Ellis was the driver of a vehicle involved in a Sept. 5 accident on Coopertown Road in West Oneida. According to an accident report filed by Trooper Mark Chitwood of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the accident occurred when a Mitsubishi Mirage driven by Ellis left the roadway and crashed through two board fences before striking a farm house some 579 ft. from the point it left the highway.

Ernest Green, 19, of Helenwood, was the passenger in the vehicle. Both Green and Ellis were airlifted to UT Medical Center in Knoxville, where Green was pronounced dead. Ellis was treated for serious injuries and later released.

In the indictment, which was returned by a Scott County grand jury on Oct. 6, prosecutors alleged that Ellis was under the influence of an illegal substance.

Ellis was arraigned in Scott County Criminal Court Monday morning.
