Carrying the cross: Youth continue Easter service tradition
“They do it as a symbol of Christ walking the cross to his crucifixion”
This was the first year twins Gillian and Stephanie, 9, could physically carry the more than 10-foot tall wooden cross down Sound Beach Avenue to Greenwich Point.
'It felt like we were carrying something very important,' said Gillian.
It is a tradition that goes back more than 60 years. The Senior Pilgrim Fellowship, a youth group with the First Congregational Church in Old Greenwich, begins the trek at noon on Good Friday, carrying the cross to the beach at Greenwich Point where it will be used for the church's sunrise service tomorrow.
