Two children, ages 4 and 8, were injured in a drive-by shooting in Marion County on Friday around 2:10 a.m. at 1111 NW 3rd St in Ocala. According to the Ocala Police Department, Ocala Fire Rescue responded and transported the injured children to the University of Florida Health Shands Hospital for treatment.

Pilot Killed at Air Show Where 11 Died in 2011

A pilot died in a plane crash Monday while attempting to qualify for the Reno National Championship Air Races, the same event where a wreck in 2011 killed a pilot and 10 spectators on the ground. No one else was injured in the crash that occurred about 3:30 p.m. on the north end of the race course at Stead Airport north of Reno, far away from the grandstand where the 10 people were killed three years ago, race spokesman Mike Draper said.

New Port Richey Mayor floats idea to ban sagging pants

The city should consider an ordinance that would combat the wearing of pants sagging below the waistline, Mayor Rob Marlowe said this week, suggesting it could be patterned after a controversial measure in Ocala. Marlowe's comments came during a City Council meeting Tuesday, where he said he began thinking about the issue after receiving phone messages from a resident who was irate over the fashion choice favored by many boys and young men.

Louise Hanby, esteemed educator

Louise Hanby, 92, of Ocala, Fla., died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2014, at her home after a short and courageous battle with cancer. She was the daughter of the late Molloy and Estelle Rogers Vaughn of Dixie-Del Farms, Lewes, and was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Arthur S. Hanby; and brothers Molloy C. Jr. and Stephen Vaughn Sr. After graduating from Lewes High School in 1939 and Madison College in1943 , where she was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority and a member of the Bluestone Society of JMU, she taught home economics in Laurel and Georgetown.
