Broward County, sheriff battle over budget cuts
“We made that clear from the get-go. The commission has refrained from micromanaging the sheriff, but there are many areas that would not affect public safety that could be addressed in his budget.”
A battle has begun between Sheriff Al Lamberti and Broward County commissioners over their demand that he shoulder half of the spending cuts needed to pay for the property tax relief voters approved.

Commissioners vowed not to retreat on their requirement that the sheriff trim his spending the same percentage as other county agencies. They said they are prepared for the sheriff to appeal the budget to Gov. Charlie Crist, and to even sue Lamberti if still not satisfied. Read more

$34 a tree: Broward canker jury ruling seen as 'big defeat'
“We wanted to control what we knew was going to be the maximum award”
A Broward County jury elected not to hand a massive payout to county homeowners who lost citrus trees to the state's canker eradication program, issuing a verdict Tuesday that will give homeowners about $34 per tree.
The jury awarded a total of more than $11.5 million, but the sum is smaller than it looks. That is because as part of the verdict, the jury agreed to let the state deduct about $7 million already paid in compensation in the form of $100 Wal-Mart vouchers and $55 cash payments. Read more
