When Rajesh Kumar Arora telephoned his parents in this northern Indian city to say he had met the girl he wanted to marry, 'the only thing we asked him was if he was happy,' his mother, Sudesh Arora, remembers.

If Kumar and his bride-to-be, Monika Rani Nayyar, had met in India, the family likely would have inquired about the girl's caste, still a key indicator of a marriage partner's suitability, even in a nation where ancient caste roles are disappearing and traditional prejudices fading. But the couple lived in Chicago's suburbs, and Arora thought caste wouldn't matter there. Read more
