Why is money going to the family? Sorry, but he has great insurance through
COM. It was a horrid accident, but he wants to go back to work.

I cannot understand how anyone could ask such a thing unless the family in question were millionaires. Expenses aside (many of which I'm sure are not covered by insurance, like all the time he hasn't been able to work), donations are an avenue for people who might not otherwise have a connection to the family but are moved to help. With the integrity the family has shown so far, I'm sure excess funds beyond their needs (if there are any), it will be put to good use either to help in the recovery process (the loss for these three people is enormous) or put in savings or perhaps donated to charity in Melody's honor.

I've seen it spelled both ways in news stories, but now I see that it is actually Melody.

You stated exactly my thoughts. I donated because I wanted to do something for the family. I do not know them personally but it took very little time and reading to realize the Osheroffs are the kind of people who will put the money to good use. Perhaps there will be money to do a Memorial for Melody.

In any event insurance doesn't cover all the costs of such a horrific event.

I get so pissed every time I remember this story. That no-good @-hole shouldn't have been on the streets, let alone licensed!

I love that this family has so much outpouring of love and support. I can't begin to imagine what an ordeal it must be to go through this..

Out of the pain and tragedy is coming love and kindness towards this family... a triumph in the face of great agony.

The man who killed Melody and caused the father to lose his leg will hopefully spend the rest of his life behind bars.

The purpose of raising money is not to line the pockets of victims, as pointed out. In my family's case, when my sister died of an accidental heroine overdose complicated by her mental illness, we raised money to help fund the Helen Vine Center in San Rafael. The Center properly treats people who would otherwise end up in jail to dry out or in a 72 hour hold in a hospital. It has saved dozens of lives in the decade it has been open.

Hopefully something positive can come of this awful tragedy, like a 3 strikes law for repeat DUI offenders.

Hey Heartless bastard, did you stop to think of how much it cost to bury their child, or the cost to make their house wheelchair excessable and all the other expenses for this tragic event????? Try to think next time before you sit down at your keyboard!!!

That's the kind of gesture we need to hear more about. With this economy, helping each other and helping nonprofits survive is critical to our society.

I cringed when I saw those comments from "Many Responses" about the "good benefits" at COM. Benefits or not, health insurance doesn't cover 100% of everything. Most insurances have limits on prosthetics, on physical therapy, on rehabilitation. This family is going to endure unbelievable costs. Every little bit helps to ease the financial burden. No one would ever want to be their position. I wouldn't even wish it on "Many Responses"!

let's not give the troll anymore airtime, people.

You are as bad as the troll for playing. Imagine if no one gave it any attention and instead focused on the family... and how much nicer it would be to read for the family and their friends instead of seeing this bickering.

Here's to Aaron and Kimberly. big time hugs!
