Boy Scouts honor America's fallen in 9/11 ceremony

On Thursday evening, a second 9/11 memorial service was hosted by the Boy Scouts of America at Newnan's Veterans Memorial Plaza, and dozens of local scouts and families were in attendance to honor America's fallen with a candlelight vigil. The ceremony at the Jackson Street park, which was organized by Verna Funk with Boy Scouts of America, focused on the importance of never forgetting 9/11 and always remembering patriotism and the freedoms America's flag represents.

Heaberlin tapped for chief role at UWG

The University of West Georgia on Wednesday announced the appointment of Dr. Robert Heaberlin, a retired Coweta County school principal, as senior director and chief administrative officer of Off-Campus Programs. Newnan's new public safety complex under construction on Jefferson Street has been taking shape in recent weeks, getting its brick outer covering and some of the front architectural details, as well as paving work on the property. Skandalakis to assist in Habersham child injury case

Later this month, the case of Bounkham "Bou Bou" Phonesavanh, the 19-month-old who was critically injured in a north Georgia, Habersham County drug raid, will be presented to a Habersham County grand jury, during which Coweta County Judicial Circuit District Attorney Pete Skandalakis will be assisting as an independent set of eyes. According to Skandalakis, shortly after the incident occurred, Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney Brian Rickman contacted Skandalakis to see if he would assist in the case.

Showers produce localized flooding

Newnan and Coweta County experienced heavy rain late Sunday that led to some localized flooding and a few downed power lines and trees. According to the National Weather Service, areas of Coweta County experienced between 4 to 6 inches of rain starting at 6 p.m., and around 8:45 p.m. a flash flood warning was issued.
