Petition Seeks Traffic-Safety Effort In Newington

Since Jennifer Walker moved to her Fisk Drive home in 1999, speeders have demolished a garbage can sitting at her curb and knocked the back bumper off her Honda Accord as it was parked on the street.

The damage to the car cost Walker $5,000. But the real estate agent and mother of two fears a more grievous price.

Her 11-year-old son, Eric, rides his bike to Martin Kellogg Middle School during the academic year. The flow of drivers ignoring the 25 mph speed limit seems heaviest between 7 and 8 a.m., when students are walking or pedaling to class, Walker said. Fisk Drive has no sidewalks, so the kids travel along the street.

If they open Alumni Rd., much of the traffic would bypass that neighborhood. It's been sitting there completed for years.

We live on Hartford Avenue and every day there are vehicles going probably 80 mph-just absolutely flying- down the street. Being that our son, as well as several other kids, like to meet at E Green school to play, it's an absolute disaster waiting to happen.

How much longer are we going to have to hear the group on Fisk Drive whine about nothing being done ont heir street? Every talk show that the town has had the last couple of months they are on bashing the Town Council for not doing anything. They are blaming the town council for not having enough police, yet this council just approved 3 more officers (this town council should not be held responsible that the other councils did not give money to hire officers). If you watched the show last night they even got the blame for the location of the speed enforcement trailer. All streets in Newington are having speeding problems and I can guarantee the people on Fisk are guilty of speeding threw someone elses neighborhood. It sounds like the only thing that will make them happy is to have an officer there 24/7 handing out tickets.
As for the kids walking to Martin Kellogg. Maybe they may want to see the way the kids are walking to school. It is not the drivers on Fisk that are a danger, but the way the kids walk on Llyod that is a danger. They walk in the middle of the road, to the point where cars stop to let them pass since they will not move to the side of the road, thye prefer the middle. If they are on the side of the road they are walking 3-4 across maaking it dangerous for the drivers and when they are riding their bikes they are in the middle of the road, not to the side. They are also not wearing helmets, which is against the law in CT.

We also live on Hartford Avenue and it is like living at the racetrack sometimes. The speeding is not just limited to cars either as tracter trailers use this street as their personal racetrack as well.

I have seen cars parked on the street hit and pushed several feet, yet when we were parking on our apron to avoid parking on the street, we got a nasty letter from the town saying we could not park there and if we did it again, we would be assessed a $150 fine for each violation.

Connecituct Ave is just as bad. People think the speed limit is 45-50. It is only 25 and the kids walk on Connecticut Ave to get to EGreen and MKMS and there are NO sidewalks in my area. Slow down people! It is not a police problem, but a society problem.

All streets in all towns have speeding problems. The people that speed are the very ones living in your neighborhood. I agree more enforcement should be done throughout town and throughout the United States. Nothing is the same anymore. Your not safe not matter what you do.

Another suggestion would be to leave the police alone. People complain that the police are not doing anything but then when the police do their job and pull you over, you complain. Make up your mind. People second guess cops all of the time. Take a walk in their shoes for once.

NAIL all Speeders.

To all citizens with problems with speed, even if you have kids or not. Visit this website:

http://www.keepkidsalivedrive25.org/

It's called Keep Kids Alive, Drive 25. I have children and I ordered signs that say, "Keep Kids Alive, Drive 25". I put that on my grass near the street and I see a difference. They have many other signs, etc.. The Town of Newington should look at this site!

There are no sidewalks on Lloyd to mention, nor down Tom-Lin. These are the main roads where the kids who walk go to get to the school. The kids do walk in the middle of the road and ride bikes without helmets, I have called the school on this before. Sidewalks would be a huge improvement on all of the roads around that area.
The roads in town are not designed to handle the amount of traffic that is now put on them. We need thoughtful town planning to alleviate this situation. Maybe the town could use the state's million dollars to hire a firm to do just that instead of renovating a parking lot!

Maybe the parents can teach their kids NOT to walk in the middle of the road. Sidewalks or not these kids need to be on the side of the road single file so they are not in traffic. We see it everyday during the school year and it is scary. We have talked to the school and up to this point nothing has been done to talk to these kids about safety walking to school. Maybe it is time the parents had that talk.

In speaking about walking single file on the side of the road, has the law changed that used to instruct pedestrians to walk AGAINST the traffic and bicycles to ride WITH the traffic? So many kids are walking with their backs to the traffic that they wouldn't see a car coming at them.

I was at the meeting last night asking for help from the town with the speeding problems. I pay taxes, and this is America where we have the right to freedom of speech. I'm sick of watching the cars fly by from 7a-830a when kids are walking and biking to school. When we have complained to the police department we have been told there are only 4 officers on duty until 730a which is why they can't do speed traps on Fisk Drive. As far as the residents on Connecticut Ave. and other areas, the petition seemed to be effective last night- you may want to consider doing a petition for your area.

In newington there is no Police traffic division dedicated to these issues. The town is large enough and there appears to be a need for a dedicated traffic Officer.

The Fisk Drive residents are doing what every resident in this town who has a problem should be doing, bringing it to the attention of those that need to do something- you may call it whining- we call it taking action and it is obviously working. You can sit back and complain in life or you can do something about a problem, we are doing something- I don't know how the kids walk on Lloyd, but my son rides his bike practically on the grass because he's so afraid of getting hit. If there were safe routes for the kids to get to school, then they wouldn't have to walk three across on Lloyd and we'd solve your problem too.... When you walk in someone else's shoes, only then can you criticize them. You obviously don't live on Fisk Dr. and you obviously don't have children.

Just remember - more officers = higher taxes. But there does seem to be a need to have more officers handing out tickets. Drive on the highway and if you go the speed limit you take your life in your hands. People going 75+ zip by you. If people slow down, we could save 5-15% of the gas being used. Imagine what that would do to the price.....

HOW ABOUT CRACKING DOWN ON TAILGATERS.
I DRIVE ON NEW BRITAIN AVE EVERY AM AND THERE IS ALWAYS SOME MORON WHO HAS TO TAILGATE. I DRIVE THE SPEED LIMIT. I ENJOY SLOWING IT DOWN JUS TO RAISE THE FOOLS BLOOD PRESSURE.
HOW ABOUT THE CELLPHONE LAW WHICH IS NOT ENFORCED. HOW ABOUT PEOPLE WHO FEEL THEY DON'T HAVE TO SIGNAL WHEN THEY TURN. HOW ABOUT PEOPLE WHO TURN RIGHT ON RED WITHOUT STOPING AND PULL OUT IN FRONT OF A CAR. THERE ARE TO MANY FOOLS OUT THERE WHO ARE OBLIVIOUS TO OTHERS AND HOW TO DRIVE.
THIS IS IN ANY TOWN. HOW ABOUT AN ALL OUT BLITZ ON ENFORCING ALL LAWS?

Because if he were, he'd be dead. And I watch him go all the way down the street until he turns on to Tom-Lin and he is on the side of the road- if not up on people's lawns as are all of this kids that I watch walk to school that live on Fisk- at 7-8 a.m. in the morning on Fisk Drive if you are walking in the middle of the road, you won't make it to school alive because the cars wouldn't have time to stop before hitting you they are going so fast. I don't disagree with you that kids are rude and walk or ride their bike in the middle of the road, with no regard for cars. I experience that on a regular basis. My children however have been taught rules, respect and manners and they shouldn't be punished because some other children have not or choose not to listen. Not every kid who walks to Kellogg walks in the middle of the road regardless, those who have the privilege of having a drivers license and the responsibility to drive a several ton vehicle that can kill a pedestrian have a far greater responsibilty of following the speed limit of 25 miles an hour on the street especially in the school zone-not 50-60 mph as they have been registering on the portable police sign. I'm also not just talking about children here, there are elderly as well as adults who walk the street on a daily basis and are at just as much risk of an out of control speeding car as are the children walking to school. Those of us on Fisk Drive are speaking on behalf of all the neighborhoods in Newington that are having traffic problems, and we know there are several and we know where they are - we are looking to the town to solve this problem for all areas where this is an issue- and it's not going to raise anyone's taxes as the money is there already and there are state grants available. As a matter of fact at last night's meeting the Council was able to save approximately $300k in the budget that can be reallocated to situations like this. We are just trying to make sure that Newington is safe for everyone. I don't know why you would have a problem with that. I invite you to walk down Fisk Dr. between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. when school begins again and tell me if you, as an adult feel safe walking on that road.

I will admit the kids going down TomLin do go to the side of the road. It is the kids going down Llyod that have no concern for the cars. They have the you move out of my way attitude.
From what I saw last night watching the show (and listening to other shows) there are some of your neighbors that are rude to the council. They are doing the best they can. They were handed this problem from the past councils. The first budget this council has done they found funds for 3 officers. The last council found funds for 2. You can not blame the council for the lack of officers, this council just took over in November. You had one neighbor blaming the council for where the sign was put. She threw the pictures at Myra Cohen. How is it the councils fault as to where to sign was put? It seems some nitpicked whatever the mayor did or said. I think your neighbors owe an apology to the council and the mayor. They are doing everything they can for your neighborhood.
