Was Presence of Security Guards "Racism"?
The normally sedate meeting of the state’s top school board erupted into controversy Thursday when the appearance of security guards triggered charges of racism. The dispute flared amid controversy over the state takeover of troubled Pointe Coupee Central High School in Morganza. A large contingent of school backers, which organizers put at 150 students, parents and others, was on hand for the board meeting, which included discussions of takeover plans.
Louella Givens of New Orleans, a member of the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, suddenly asked why two security guards were in the back of the meeting room. Weegie Peabody, executive director of the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, replied that she requested the guards for crowd control. That angered Givens.
As Pointe Coupee Central backers began leaving the meeting room, board president Linda Johnson of Plaquemine tried to soothe hurt feelings.
Johnson and Givens are the only black members of the board. Most students at Pointe Coupee Central are black.
Joetta Hunter-Joseph of New Roads, an administrator at the school and one of the leaders of the group, blasted the presence of security guards as she left the state education building. Hunter-Joseph said the security officials were a “slap in the face” at students and a suggestion that they did not know how to act, which she called racist.
Sate Superintendent of Education Paul Pastorek said the two security guards came from the check-in desk at the Claiborne Building, where the state Education Board meets. He said he understood why their presence angered school supporters.
“Of course the symbolism was such that it offended the folks from Pointe Coupee and they felt like it was a racial slight,” Pastorek said. “I understand why they felt like that.”
The board Thursday approved plans for a group called Advance Baton Rouge to take charge of the school as a charter operation for the 2008-09 school year. Charters are public schools that are supposed to offer innovative teaching methods without much of the red tape seen in traditional public schools.
State officials said Advance Baton Rouge spelled out detailed plans on how to improve academic and other problems at the school. Critics said Pointe Coupee Central needs individual attention, which they said Advance Baton Rouge cannot provide with two other schools to oversee as well.

I'm a tad confused here. How was the presence of security at a public meeting deemed to be racist? Were the guards wearing white hoods? Were they carrying a Nazi flag? Were they carrying LaRaza placards? Are the people of Pointe Coupee so overly-sensitive that they infer from the presence of security guards that they are being taunted? Someone who was there, please explain this to me.

I think that people are much too quick to claim racism in some of these cases. Everyone that was present, white or black, was subjected to the Security so I don't see how it is racist. It is unfortunate that a school can be performing so poorly and all people can think about is security guards. I know that there is plenty of racial injustice in this area, but if you use it as your only weapon it will loose its bite when a real situation comes about. It's like the little boy that cried wolf.

Actually one of the BESE members questioned the presence of the guards that arent normally there. One of the other board members said that she requested them because she felt uncomfortable due to the fact that there were a large number of people from Pointe Coupee.

Yes it was racism. If that was a room of white people from FRA and Catholic High they would be serving cake and ice cream. I guess that East Baton Rouge Parish is the safest parish in the state as well. Give me a break. To McFarland, I've never seen a PCCH parent attack anybody before especially anyone of authority. Oh yea I have no affilation with Point Coupee Central. I went to Catholic High. I guess now I can call the police if I anticipate something is about to happen even if no type of verbal or physical threats are given by anybody anywhere I go.

How could you. You weren't in that environment and you should go kiss your parents for the extra effort it took to keep you from it. If you're such a Central fan bring your family back to Pointe Coupee and entrust the public schools here. See how that works out for you. I have never seen a security guard at any Catholic meetings either, it's called home training, self restraint, and self control. If Central were worth a damn there would be no FRA or CHSPC. Central is a den of ignorance and out of control behavior. Make more excuses and continue the tradition of Central excellence. You deserve each other.

Security should always err on the side of safety. With all the killings going on in our public schools and colleges there should be security at ANY public meeting. Times are changing. If I had been at the meeting I am not sure that just two security guards would have made me feel safe. I don't care if everybodys black or everybodys white. Crime in our schools is color blind. I will be glad when I can throw the racism card. Oh well I guess I will have to wait for Obama to get elected to be able to do that!

I drove a school bus there and it wasn't fun, safe or a career that I wanted to stay in if I had to stay there. Yes I was scared alot of the times. I am a black lady and it dosen't have anything to do with racist. IT's called safety, smart, and want something better in life than to be scared all the time. NOW I drive for the elderly. AND I am not scared and enjoy my job. So people and parents of central please read the writing on the walls. It's time for you to do your part and that is step up to the plate and start being parents of education, and that starts at home.

But I will.

Let's see... in the past 10 years PC Central has had a brawl at a track meet, a basketball game, and a football game. These were not minor things either. At the track meet, there was a free-for-all where the police had to be called, the meet was called off, and the school was fined by the LHSAA. At the basketball game, it was a bench clearing brawl that lead to the bleachers clearing on to the floor, EXTRA security had to be called in, and the game had to be called off. In a football game against Parkveiw, it turned into a bench-clearing brawl that had the game called in the 4th q. and their next game had to be played on a Monday, I think! This is only the things I can think of in sports, there has been more things that I have "heard" happened at school, but don't have 1st hand information about! Now, were ALL these someone eles' fault? I haven't heard anything about the other schools getting into trouble in other sports like PC Central! How many parents or supporters tried to help? How many parents or supporters were involed? Don't say parent's don't get involed, ask coach Thomas about having to call the police to escort him out of his own office after a football game! LHS is no better. I have seen, 1st hand, parents and players ATTACK a basketball coach after a game and the police had to be called! This parish has a BAD name, and it is going to take alot for people to view it in a different way! NO MORE TAXES!!

Yes, Central has a resource officer on campus and so does Livonia. Rosenwald was added this year and Rougon will have one next year...It is called campus safety....Lets remember other high schools and college campus where people lost their lives...We live in a different time, and must take steps to prevent danger. Central has not have as many problems they first had in the 90's. Students are not trying to kill the teacher or attacking the teacher. Central have its share of disrespectful students, but that is poor parenting and culture. If students from Central transfer to Livonia next year, it will have similar situations that Central had when they open in 1991. People must adjust to each other and that does not happen over night. It can work. I attended summer school at Central when students from Livonia, Catholic and False River attended the same school. Nothing happen, everyone got along...maybe it was just for 6 weeks, but it can happen. We live in a society made up of all shades of the rainbow and we must learn to respect people for their knowledge, their attitude, their overall being...not their skin color...its 2008.

Things happen at Central and all the actions you stated are true, however the situations need details...The track meet happen because of poor planning from the coaches at that time who was all from Baton Rouge and nobody else wanted them so the board placed them at Central. The basketball game resulted because fans get to involved when two teams of similar players play. Coach Thomas was a racist, and didn't even apply for the job, but he was certified and the personel director needed to fill the slot. The school is under better administration, and staff. They are doing a good job, give them a chance.

The security guards should have escorted them back to the bus. As my grandmother would say, they're a day late and a dollar short. P.C. Central has been in trouble for years. The school board members, superintendent, principal, teachers, parents and students all share the blame as they were all aware of this fact and continued to do absolutely nothing to rectify the problems. The problems do not start at Central. By the time these children get to Central, they're already so far behind that they don't have a chance in hell to catch up. So those individuals that are a)crying racism because extra security guards were present at the BESE board meeting, b) blaming the school board for all the problems and c) stupid enough to believe the shit, all need to take a look in the mirror.

Im over 40 and I remember we had police at our school (plaquemine) and even had metal detectors.
I do believe extra security at this meeting was appropriate because, IF a fight or something had broke out, someone would have wanted to SUE someone because they did not have enough security protection for them. This racism thing, is getting way out of hand.
And, PCC failing because of academic reasonings, is first the school board, these teachers cant do anything without the school board telling them to. I dont care if they are certified or not, The school board is their superiors. SO, to fix this snowball affect the SCHOOL BOARD needs fixing first. THEN, strongly I believe the PARENTS need to step in and support kids that go to school and demand they learn, not just eat lunch and talk to friends on the phone. Ive heard so many times, "My child doesnt learn because no one is there to teach them" BULLSHIT, this is a fine excuse to help your child fail. IF a parent would take intrest in their childs education instead of critizing the middleman all the time, maybe the dropout rate and the stay at home every other day child should get "the belt" and learn something. SO many of these kids have the I dont give a damn attitude and parents arent doing a thing about it. I guess they rather raise babies and stay on welfare than get an education and become somebody. PCC is a beautiful school, its ashame race and stupidity is going to force it to close.
And, I know several kids that have received a great education from PCC, where is the insight of those that do well, NO, the media and the school board doesnt want people to know that some of these kids are excellling where they should be.
Dont close this school, make these kids that have attitudes LEARN. Get the electric paddle out or something, it didnt kill us and Im sure it wouldnt kill them. MAKE EM' pull up those damn uniform pants put on a belt and walk like a person should, and go get momma out the bed and make her responsible too.
Besides all of this chatter, Racist isnt the problem its "A Race to see who's going to blame who!"
